The Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) Scientific Board meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Emine Alp Meşe. The meeting evaluated the current situation of the disease in our country and the measures taken for its control. Measures and strategies to be implemented before the Eid al-Adha holiday, when both animal mobility and human-animal contact increase, were determined.

CCHF, which is seen in more than 30 countries worldwide, is concentrated in the northern part of Central Anatolia, the Central Black Sea region, and the northern part of Eastern Anatolia in our country. In other countries, on average, one-quarter of those infected die. In some countries, this rate reaches up to 80 percent. In Turkey, however, thanks to the implemented measures, surveillance system, and effective treatment approach, the mortality rate is around 4 percent.

As of June 10th this year, the number of CCHF cases in Turkey has reached 480, an increase compared to last year, and 15 people have lost their lives. In light of this data, the measures to be taken and the studies to be conducted were discussed at the CCHF Scientific Board meeting.

Prevention Methods:

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), particularly prevalent in summer and autumn, is an infectious disease transmitted through tick bites or contact with ticks. The disease can also be transmitted to humans through unprotected contact with the blood and body fluids of infected animals and sick individuals. Fever, headache, widespread body aches, and fatigue are the most common symptoms. Personal protective measures are crucial in controlling the disease.

To protect against Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever:

• When visiting areas at risk of tick bites, such as fields, vineyards, gardens, forests, and picnic areas, wear clothing that covers as much of the body as possible, tuck trouser legs into socks, and choose light-colored clothing so that ticks can be easily seen on the clothes.

• Upon returning from areas at risk of tick bites, check yourself and your children for ticks. If a tick is found, remove it immediately, without touching it with bare hands, by grasping it as close to the body as possible with a suitable material (cloth, plastic bag, gloves, etc.).

• If you cannot remove the tick yourself, seek medical attention at the nearest health facility as soon as possible.

• Avoid touching animal blood, body fluids, or tissues with bare hands.
