It says in the article that a coop in Isikyolu region of Elazig had chicken deaths, and samples had been sent to be tested on Feb. 5th. The + rsults came on Feb 8th, but by then, the owner had sent chickens to a processing plant Malatya without the required transportation papers. The processing plant has been quarantined, all chickens culled, and the its products withdrwan from the markets. They will all be prosecuted for endangering public health.

Zkurmus and Oric,

Thanks for keeping us informed. Have you seen any changes if how friends in Istanbul feel about bird flu? Any sign of preparation? Is there any discussion of birdflu in Iraq or other neighboring countries?

Nope, noone I know is prepping, and everyone, as usual, seems to have forgotten about it already. We do see reports of BF in Iraq in the newspapers and newscasts, but nothing huge. Also, there was a mention of a Chinese woman dying of BF in the news today. All children from grade 1 to 9 have started school last week, and they are all supposed to be getting info on BF per the ministry of education.

Re: Turkish thread

From Anatolian Agency
The migratory Paths are Changing

The migrating birds have headed towards the warmer regions and new cases of BF might be seen in the lakes region as well as Aegean and Mediterranean regions, said the Director of Natural and National Parks ministry, Mustafa Kemal Yalinkilic. The eastern and northern watering regions' freezing has lead the migrating birds to head to these regions.

Since the migratory birds might be carrying the virus without being sick, and without showing any symptoms, it is hard to diagnose those with BF virus, said Yalinkilic, adding "a few weeks ago, the dire situation was in Agri and Dogubayazit, the threat is now in western and southern mediterranean. new BF cases are probable."

The first degree threat is in Agean and Mediterranean regions, and all children as well as home bred animals should be kept away from deltas, lagoons and similar water related regions.

KUŞLARIN G?? ROTASI DEĞİŞİYOR
ANKARA - G??men kuşların sıcak b?lgelere doğru harekete ge?tiği, bu nedenle G?ller Y?resi ile Ege ve Akdeniz b?lgelerinde yeni kuş gribi vakalarının g?r?lebileceği belirtilerek, gerekli ?nlemlerin alınması istendi.
Doğa ve Milli Parklar Genel M?d?r? Mustafa Kemal Yalınkılı?, T?rkiye'nin doğusu ile kuzeyindeki sulak alanların donması nedeniyle g??men kuşların sıcak b?lgelere g??meye başladığını s?yledi.

G??men kuşların, kuş gribini hastalanmadan taşıyabildiklerini, bu nedenle ?lmedikleri s?rece hastalığı taşıyıp taşımadıklarının belirlenmesinin zor olduğunu anlatan Yalınkılı?, ''Daha d?n Ağrı ve Doğubeyazıt'ta sıkıntı varken, bu tehlike bug?n Batı ve G?ney Akdeniz'e kaymış durumdadır. Yeni kuş gribi vakaları muhtemeldir'' dedi.

Yalınkılı?, başta G?ller Y?resi olmak ?zere Ege ve Akdeniz b?lgelerinin kuş gribi a?ısından birinci derecede riskli yerler olduğuna dikkati ?ekerek, ?ocukların, k?mes hayvanları ile diğer evcil hayvanların bu b?lgelerdeki delta, lag?n gibi sulak alanlara yaklaştırılmaması gerektiğini kaydetti.

40 soldiers in hospital with flu

40 soldiers in hospital with flu

From the daily newspaper, Hurriyet, as well as TV news reports from Haberturk... 40 soldiers from Bolu in hospital with regular flu. The hospital staff have been handed out masks and protective equipment, though no suspicions of BF. The hospital spokesperson said it is normal for people living in closed quarters to catch the flu virus, and that there are no indications of BF in any of the soldiers.

Plus, from anatolian agency:

BF Under control
Minister of Agriculture and Villages, said the precautions taken play a great role in combatting the disease, and that it is now under control. He added that the spread of the disease relies most importantly on migratory birds and since Turkey is on the way of migratory paths, the disease is bound to appear again and due to the migratory birds' movements right now, Turkey is still under serious threat. (more warnings on contacting poultry and wild birds, as well as warning on having chickens at home etc. -zk)

"KUŞ GRİBİ KONTROL ALTINDA"
ResimANKARA - Tarım ve K?yişleri Bakanı Mehdi Eker, kuş gribinin kontrol altına alındığını belirterek, alınan tedbirlerin hastalığın bulaşması ve yaygınlaşmasını ?nlediğini, hastalıkla m?cadele a?ısından a?ıkta kanatlı hayvan beslenmemesinin ?nem taşıdığını bildirdi.
Hastalığın bulaşmasında g??men kuşların ?nemli rol oynadığını ifade eden Eker, T?rkiye'nin g?? yolları ?zerinde bulunduğu i?in hastalığın ka?ınılmaz olduğunu belirtti. Şu anda g??men kuşların hareketlerine bağlı olarak hastalık riskinin devam ettiğini kaydeden Eker, ancak alınan tedbirlerle hastalığın bulaşması ve yayılmasının ?nlendiğini s?yledi.
M?cadele a?ısından a?ıkta kanatlı beslenmemesinin b?y?k ?nem taşıdığına işaret eden Eker, vatandaşları bu konuda uyardı.
Uzmanların, entegre tesislerde ?retilmiş, denetimden ge?miş, sağlıklı k?mes hayvanları ve yumurtaları uygun şekilde pişirerek t?ketilebileceği g?r?ş?n? ifade ettiklerini belirten Eker, ''Ancak nerede kesildiği bilinmeyen, a?ıkta yetiştirilmiş ve satılmış ?r?nlerin t?ketilmesi risklidir. Vatandaşlarımızın bu konuda hassas davranması gerekiyor'' dedi.

Re: Turkish thread

Oric, Zkurmus, thx for the updates.

What will be valuable to the world and this group is when you see a change in the way the Turkish people in Istanbul (and via your countryside contacts) respond when they are again exposed to BF.

Again, you may be on the leading edge.

What I would like to learn about is the "quality of fear".

When BF appears in humans, will you then be seeing irrational behavior [such as mobs breaking into stores, or stopping trucks on the road, or home invasions--burglary/theft].

And, I would like to learn about the good things that people do, and the change in prices, if you see any.

In the past pandemics, we have documented information about this type of behavior in England, and in the USA. You will be able to "see" what's happening in Turkey.

Finally, are people in Turkey purchasing and eating chicken/turkey now??

I haven't seen any vandalism/stealing etc from mobs in Turkey. Ever. It happened in the late 50s for a week or so - a religious thing, diracted toward Jews and Armenian Christians' stores were ransacked.. But nothing since. I'd hate to make a gross generalisation, but most Turks are very respectful of their neighborhoods, and their neighbors' properties. Its like a common sensical neighborhood watch. Now, if that were to happen in a crisis situation, things might change. We did see some stores being emptied etc during the 1999 earthquake, but the burglers were quickly beaten (sometimes seriously injured) and brought to the police by citizens. I'd think of that as a total crisis situation, and still, people were watching out for each others' property. My sistern-in-law's parents lived in Adapazari, their pharmacy and home ended up being 3-4 stories buried under rubble (they survived, miraculously) and they tell us that their next door neighbors stood watch over the building for weeks until my brother brough excavators to dig up whatever was left of their belongings. They did recover some jewellery as well as their safe in the pharmacy.

As to chicken issues, even I bought chicken again last week, we continue to buy eggs, and things seem to be picking up a bit. Less fear.
