Two Avian Flu Outbreaks Confirmed in Northern Turkey

11 May 2015

TURKEY - Two outbreaks of avian influenza have been confirmed on northern Turkey; the H5N1 highly pathogenic virus has been identified in one of these cases.

A poultry farm in northern Turkey is under quarantine after the bird flu virus was detected, a local official said on 10 May, according to Anadolu Agency.
Ali Manti, the governor of Bandirma on Turkey’s Marmara coast, said the disease was detected in Balikesir province.

He did not say whether the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which can infect and kill humans, had been detected.

Teams from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock are culling chickens and disinfecting the farm, Mr Manti said, without specifying the number of infected birds.

On 10 May, the government announced that bird flu had been detected following the deaths of 40,000 chickens in Bandirma over the previous four months.
On the same day, Turkey reported an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu virus in the northern province of Kastamonu, the first case of the highly infectious strain in seven years.

BURSA, Turkey

Turkish health minister reassured the public Tuesday that it was safe to consume eggs and poultry after around 100,000 chickens were purged at a farm in northwestern Turkey Monday following bird flu concerns.

"Right now, all I can say is that there are no risks concerning eggs or poultry," Mehmet Muezzinoglu told reporters in the Mudanya district of the northwestern Bursa province.

"We are entering a period where the avian flu will no longer be an issue as the weather gets warmer," Muezzinoglu said, adding that the Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Livestock had taken all necessary measures to prevent the virus from spreading, including imposing quarantines at some farms.

Around 100,000 chickens were killed at a poultry farm in Mudanya Monday after a number of chickens died.

The farm was quarantined, and an investigation was launched.

Turkish authorities said on Thursday that bird flu cases had been detected in the country's most populous city Istanbul, but there is no risk of an epidemic at present.

Traces of the virus were discovered in wild winged birds in both European and Anatolian sides, Kartal and Arnavutkoy districts in specific, officials said, adding that actions had been taken.

The authorities have banned hunting in city's forestlands until the end of September, hoping to block virus transmission from wild animals to poultry and people.
