Ten cases of West Nile fever confirmed in Tunisia
The Maghreb Economist
2023/10/31 AT 4:55
Tunisia recorded ten cases of West Nile fever virus, between September 23 and October 26, 2023 out of a total of 141 suspected cases. This is what results from the figures published on the official website of the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases.
The cases of West Nile fever are distributed as follows: five cases in Tozeur, one case in Monastir, two cases in Gabès, one case in Kef, one case in Sfax, in addition to the death of an elderly man of 88 years old by this virus on October 23, 2023 following his hospitalization on the 21st of the same month.
The National Observatory emphasizes that these cases were detected following PCR tests, carried out at the Pasteur Institute in Tunis and at the Habib Bourguiba hospital in Sfax.
In this context, epidemiology specialist Amine Slim indicated in a statement to TAP that the spread of West Nile fever in these governorates is due to the nature of this virus. Which appears every year, between September and November, on bird migration routes.
He indicated that West Nile fever has appeared in Tunisia for seven years, recording 300 cases of attack throughout the territory. While specifying that climate change and rising temperatures are at the origin of the spread of this virus.
