Notice on prevention of contagious lumpy skin disease in cattle

Within the framework of the continuous health monitoring of the herd and following the suspicion by a private veterinarian of a case of contagious lumpy skin disease in cows in the delegation of Fernana in the governorate of Jendouba in a bull owned by a breeder in an area 15 km from the Algerian border, the veterinary services of the regional delegation for agricultural development in the region moved to conduct technical research and take samples required for laboratory analysis at the Veterinary Research Institute in Tunis, which confirmed the infection of the aforementioned animal and thus recorded the first appearanceof a case of contagious lumpy skin disease in cattle in Tunisia.

It is worth noting that this disease has recently spread to neighboring countries and is transmitted by many insects and infects cows, but is not contagious to humans.

To enhance technical research, a specialized team from the Animal Health Vigilance Center set out to support the efforts of the regional veterinary services and conduct a thorough study to determine the source of the infection on the one hand and provide scientific data to guide taking appropriate measures.

The current health procedures have been activated in accordance with the current regulations, and the farm concerned has been cordoned off, and the transmitting insects have been treated, and animals have been prevented from entering or leaving it, in addition to inspection visits to all neighbouring farms, estimated at around 30, to ensure that the disease is not spreading and to sensitise breeders to prevent it.

In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries recommends that farmers be more vigilant and immediately report suspected cases to prevent the spread of the disease, noting that reporting infectious diseases is mandatory according to Order No. 2200 of 2009.

The Ministry also reminds of the need to respect biosecurity measures, reduce animal movement, dry stagnant water, and house animals in clean, prepared stables.
