Tuberculosis crisis hits Papua New Guinea
SYDNEY, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Health experts say Papua New Guinea is suffering from a tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and have found that many people in rural areas are dying from the disease without ever being diagnosed, local media reported on Tuesday.
The international health authorities have asked the PNG government to declare TB a public health emergency after a seven- month study into infection rates, the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) reported.
The PNG Institute of Medical Research study says rural areas have some of the highest incidences of TB in the world.
