Tsunami hits Tonga after giant volcano eruption
Published 1 hour ago

Tsunami waves caused by a giant underwater volcanic eruption have hit the Pacific country of Tonga.

Social media footage showed water washing through a church and several homes, and witnesses said ash was falling over the capital, Nuku'alofa.

A tsunami warning sent residents scrambling to higher ground.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano was heard across the South Pacific, reportedly as far as New Zealand and Australia.

Tonga's capital lies just 65km north of the volcano, on the country's main island of Tongatapu...

Tonga volcano could erupt again soon, says volcano expert who camped at the site
By Tracey Shelton
Posted 3 hours ago, updated 3h ago

The undersea volcano that erupted near Tonga sending a massive wave surge through the Pacific Ocean could erupt again within days, but Saturday's blast was likely the biggest we will experience, an expert says.

Shane Cronin, Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Auckland, spent six nights camped out on the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano after its last series of eruptions in 2015.

As part of a team of experts, Dr Cronin ran tests across the area to study the volcanic behaviour taking place below the ocean surface and determine the likelihood of future eruptions.

The team found evidence of regular "big ones" occurring roughly every 1,000 years.

With the last one taking place around the year 1100, it seemed likely the area was headed for another large-scale eruptive sequence...

Tonga volcanic eruption: 'Too early to tell' - Jacinda Ardern on injuries, damage from disaster
16 Jan, 2022 01:39 AM

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it's "too early to tell" whether anyone has lost their life in the volcanic eruption and tsunami that hit Tonga, although so far there were no official reports of deaths of injuries.

A defence force plane is ready to fly out, and may leave tomorrow, and a New Zealand Navy vessel is on standby to provide assistance if required.

Ardern was speaking in Auckland with Defence Minister Peeni Henare and Pacific Peoples Minister Aupito William Sio, who laid out the Government's first response to the crisis.

She said one of the first requests from Tonga was for water, as the ash cloud from the eruption had contaminated water supplies.

Ardern said "at this stage it would be too early" to tell whether there were fatalities.

"I know many of you will have seen the footage and found it deeply disturbing," she said..

Distress signal prompts UN concern after Tonga volcanic eruption

6:40 am today

A distress signal has been detected in an isolated, low-lying group of islands in the Tonga archipelago following Saturday's massive volcanic eruption and tsunami, the United Nations said, prompting particular concern for its inhabitants.

...Initial reports suggested no mass casualties on the main island of Tongatapu, but two people were reported missing and the capital Nuku'alofa was badly damaged, as were resorts and homes along the island's western beaches, it said.

"Further volcanic activity cannot be ruled out," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said

... The uninhabited volcanic island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai all but disappeared following the blast, according to satellite images from around 12 hours later.

... The OCHA said there had been no contact from the Ha'apai group of islands and there was "particular concern" about two small low-lying islands - Fonoi and Mango, where an active distress beacon had been detected.

According to the Tonga government, 36 people live on Mango and 69 on Fonoi.

Plans underway to reconnect Tonga to communication services

4:30pm Source: 1News
By Barbara Dreaver

The eruption and ensuing tsunami severed the Kingdom’s only submarine cable in two places and damaged satellite equipment after it struck the capital, Nuku’alofa.

Only satellite phones - of which there are not many in Tonga - are working, and the cable will take at least two weeks to repair.

... there is currently a thick layer of ash coating the 2.6 kilometre runway of Fua’amotu International Airport. A Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules, which was due to depart on Tuesday with emergency aid supplies has now been delayed due to this.

Waves from eruption in Tonga cause an oil spill in Peru

January 17, 2022, 3:17 PM
By Associated Press

LIMA, Peru -- Unusually high waves attributed to the eruption of an undersea volcano in Tonga caused an oil spill on the Peruvian coast, but authorities said Monday the spill was controlled within hours and there's an ongoing process to clean the area.

The Peruvian Civil Defense Institute said in a press release that a ship was loading oil into La Pampilla refinery on the Pacific coast on Sunday when strong waves moved the boat and caused a spill.

The government didn't say how many gallons were spilled only that local and federal authorities were working to clean the coast.

All homes on one of Tonga's islands destroyed, 3 people dead
Waves of up to 15 metres hit the Ha'apia island group, where Mango is located
Thomson Reuters · Posted: Jan 18, 2022 11:06 AM ET | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

All the homes on one of Tonga's small outer islands have been destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption and tsunami, with three people so far confirmed dead, the government said on Tuesday in its first update since the disaster struck.

With communications badly hampered by the severing of an undersea cable, information on the scale of the devastation after Saturday's eruption had mostly come from reconnaissance aircraft.

But the office of Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni said in a statement that every home on Mango island, where around 50 people live, had been destroyed, only two houses remained on Fonoifua, and Namuka island had suffered extensive damage.

Tonga's deputy head of mission in Australia, Curtis Tu'ihalangingie, earlier said pictures taken by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) showed "alarming" scenes of a village destroyed on Mango and buildings missing on Atata island, which is closer to the volcano...

TONGA: VOLCANIC ERUPTION
Flash Update #3
As of 18 January 2022

Situation Overview

The United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) has released a preliminary assessment report and has analyzed five areas/islands. Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai; Nuku’alofa; Uoleva; Uiha and Nomuka. The Pleiades satellite image acquired on 16 January 2022 shows that the caldera of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai has collapsed and the island has lost a substantial percentage of its initial surface of 285ha. Damage can also be seen in Nuku’alofa, Uoleva, Nomuka and Uihawith mainly inundated areas and zones with ash deposits. The analysis can be viewed and downloaded at:https://www.unitar.org/maps/map/3433.

The European Union activated its Emergency Management Service of the EU Earth Observations System Copernicus and initial results are available online under https://emergency.copernicus.eu/mapp...onents/EMSR558 and underhttps://emergency.copernicus.eu/mapping/system/files/components/EMSR558_AOI02_GRA_PRODUCT_r1_RTP01_v1.p df

Yesterday, Australia and New Zealand carried out surveillance flights over Tonga. The pictures are currently being analyzed, will first be shared with the Tongan Government, and should then be available shortly.

The full extent of damage is yet to be fully quantified. The eruption broke the underwater communications cable, leaving most parts of Tonga without communication and internet access. A ship is underway from Papua New Guinea to fix the cable. It is feared that the rupture of this cable is close to the volcano, making it potentially dangerous to restore. Anticipating an extended period of communications challenges. Communication means within Tonga are gradually being restored. Tonga is also negotiating with broadband satellite operator Kacific to access a satellite internet connection.

  • The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Taa’pai volcano is simmering down, but it left a shroud of ash over the mainland, floodwaters inland and caused damage to infrastructure, particularly in the small islands.
  • Clean drinking water supply and environmental clean-up are among the priority humanitarian needs initially expressed.
  • UNICEF is mobilizing emergency supplies prepositioned in the Australian humanitarian warehouse in Brisbane and the UNICEF warehouse in Fiji for immediate deployment to Tonga.

    Situation Overview & Humanitarian Needs

Three days after the explosive eruption that triggered a tsunami, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Taa’pai volcano in Tonga appearsto be simmering down as the volcanic activity has been downgraded to Alert Level 3, meaning that eruption hazards are now confined near its vent. Communications to Tonga are still a challenge. While local telecommunications within the main island of Tongatapu have been restored, overseas communications still depend on a few satellite phones operating in the island. Early reports describe substantial ash coverage around Nuku’alofa, inundation of coastal areas and damage to someinfrastructure. Two casualties were confirmed. While damage to agriculture is less than what was feared, concerns about water supply, air quality and availability of fuel have been raised. Outbreak of waterborne diseases is also feared as tidal surges caused flooding 2-3 blocks inland. Aerial surveillance showed significant infrastructure damage to small islands in the Haapai group, north of the capital. The main airport in the capital is not yet operational as the ash covering the runaway is still being cleared. Repatriation flights from New Zealand and Fiji have also been cancelled because of the ash cloud. Entry to Tonga remains restricted because of COVID-19 protocols. ...
