Tripura curbs on poultry
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Agartala, Dec. 30: The Tripura government has tightened restrictions on the import of poultry and eggs as a preventive measure against bird flu.

Asish Roy Barman, the director of the animal resource development, has requested all the four district magistrates of the state to initiate action against anyone found importing poultry and eggs from Bangladesh or the neighbouring states in defiance of the official restrictions.

BSF jawans posted along the state?s border with Bangladesh have also been put on high alert to prevent smuggling of chicken and eggs.

Officers of the animal resource department yesterday seized more than 2,000 poultry imported by a businessman in Dharmanagar subdivision of North Tripura from Assam.

?Our officers have seized more than 2,000 illegally imported poultry fowl. We have approached the district magistrate of North Tripura for action against any businessman or individual found importing chicken and eggs till a clearance is issued by our department,? Roy Barman said.

Over the past week, a number of poultry traders have been booked by the police for illegally importing poultry and eggs from Bangladesh and selling them in the state, he added. Police sources here said specific criminal cases have been initiated against four businessmen ? Gouranga Paul of Agartala, Swapan Saha and Akhtar Mia of Sonamura and Vishnu Chakraborty of Bishalgarh.

Besides, separate cases have been registered against two poultry businessmen of Agartala, Sudip Acharjee and Subrata Saha for importing chicks by air. ?They are absconding but we will nab them soon?, the police said, adding that they would keep strict vigil in the state to prevent illegal import and smuggling of chickens.

Jyotirmay Chakraborty, the additional director of the animal resource department, however, asserted that Tripura was free from the avian flu menace.
