Fever signs alert

THU, JUNE 05, 2014 - 12:08 AM

Local health authorities are on heightened alert for ?indigenous? cases of chikungunya fever.

That is following a positive result in one of the 62 samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), in Trinidad, for testing between December last year, when the first case was reported in the region, and the end of May.

Minister of Health John Boyce yesterday told members of the media that the lone case recorded locally was imported through a male who arrived in Barbados on May 25 and had since returned to his country.

Boyce said local health officials remained in contact with both the Ministry of Health and chief medical officer in the country from which the man with the confirmed case came.

Barbados has a chikungunya jingle to sensitise people to the mosquito-borne disease, and it has also issued a travel advisory asking people travelling to places with confirmed cases to take the necessary precautions. (YB)

Three chikungunya cases in T&T

By port of spain - Michelle Loubon

Jul 13, 2014

Chikungunya, commonly known as CHIKV, has entered 26 Caribbean countries and ?it is spreading at one country per week?, Dr James Hospedales, executive director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), said yesterday.

Chikungunya is a viral disease which is spread by the dreaded aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue fever. It is characterised by severe pains in the joints. In the dialect of a tribe in East Africa, CHIKV, means ?that which bends you up.?

Asked to give an update on the status of CHIKV, Hospedales, in a telephone interview yesterday, said: ?The Ministry of Health has confirmed three people got CHIKV based on the lab tests at CARPHA. It is spreading at one country a week. What has been predicted for some time has come to pass because 26 Caribbean countries have reported cases since it entered in December last year. It recently got into the big islands like Haiti and Dominican Republic. It is in Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela.?

Hospedales confirmed there have been three cases locally. On Sunday, in newspaper advertisements, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan confirmed there were three cases of chikungunya infection locally. The release also called upon the population to practise protective measures, including wearing loose-fitting clothing and getting rid of old tyres.

Even as local authorities ramp up clean-up operations to try and stem the spread of the chikungunya virus, health authorities in Grenada are alarmed by its rampant spread in the smaller islands.

In an article in the weekly newspaper the Grenada Informer, health officials expressed concern that of the 7,500 population of the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, more than 65 per cent of residents had contracted the virus.
