Woman tests positive in Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN - Trinidad has confirmed its first case of the H1N1 virus.

The Ministry of Health said a woman who recently travelled to countries battling the flu had tested positive. It did not provide any details about her but said she was recuperating.

The case was confirmed by the Trinidad-based Caribbean Epidemiology Research Centre.

Health officials are testing the woman's relatives and friends as well.

Barbados, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Cuba and the Dominican Republic are among the other Caribbean countries that have confirmed cases.

The World Health Organisation reported yesterday that the disease had reached 66 countries and infected more than 19 000 people, causing at least 117 deaths.

Second swine flu case

A second case of Influenza A/H1N1 has been confirmed in the country. According to a release from the Ministry of Health yesterday, the second case was found after testing was conducted on persons travelling with the index case for H1N1, consistent with due protocol.

Investigators who worked on a list of persons who had contact with the index case discovered and confirmed the results late Friday evening. The two people had been sitting together on the flight back to Trinidad from Miami.

The virus was first confirmed in a woman late last Thursday after the Ministry of Health received written confirmation of the latest test results of a sample sent to the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC). The woman is currently isolated in her home and is being monitored by the ministry. Her illness is not regarded as life threatening and was described as ?quite mild?.

Medical Director of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Accident and Emergency, Dr Helmer Hilwig, during a news conference on Friday, noted that the woman, who is from Mt Lambert, had admitted to sleeping in the same bed as her nine-year-old daughter. However, the girl has shown no signs of having contracted the virus. It was also learnt that ministry officials had to reassure employees at the Agricultural Development Bank that this particular case was a mild one as the woman?s brother, who works at the bank, also lives with her.

The Ministry of Health has already contacted and tested the people sitting close to the index case and continues to contact more people from that flight.

Given that two people on American Airlines flight number 1647 of May 30 from Miami to Piarco have been infected, the ministry is requesting all persons who were on this flight and have not been contacted so far to immediately call the Ministry?s H1N1 hotline at 800-WELL (9355) and indicate that they were on this specific flight.

The ministry is asking as a precautionary measure that all persons from the same flight stay at home as much as possible and avoid mass gatherings so as to minimise the possibility of any further potential spread of the virus. The ministry reiterated what Health Minister Jerry Narace said at a press conference last Friday that all activities have been ramped up to ensure the containment of the virus locally.

They are urging all citizens to practice good hygiene by washing hands and proper respiratory etiquette (cover your cough, sneeze, etc). Dr Yitades Gebre, advisor, family health and disease management at WHO/PAHO when asked how quickly could the virus have spread throughout the entire flight said that once an individual has the virus they become infectious one day before they become symptomatic.

?The first case could have been transmitting the virus one day before she started to feel the symptoms and she began feeling unwell immediately after she arrived,? he said.

The twin-island republic, the release said, "has had 18 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in the last week and the health sector has advised that it is spreading on a community to community basis".

It added that the health sector in the country does not currently have any known method of impeding the spread of the virus.

Trinidad A/H1N1 Cases Jump To 59 -Health Ministry


PORT OF SPAIN (AFP)--The number of cases of the A/H1N1 influenza virus in Trinidad and Tobago has risen to 59, the Health Ministry reported Saturday.

"The number of confirmed cases of the influenza A(H1N1) cases spiked to 59 on Saturday, with 22 new confirmed cases within 3 days," health officials said.

Of the confirmed cases, the ministry said that 37 patients have already recovered. Authorities on the Caribbean island also noted, however, that "the virus is spreading a lot faster than expected."

The number of people confirmed as H1N1 cases in Trinidad and Tobago now stands at sixty-three.

There has been an increase, but the health ministry is insisting the swine flu virus is under control.

But the Ministry of Health says fifty-nine of the sixty-three cases have fully recovered and are now re-integrated into normal life.

The Ministry says it is satisfied that its surveillance system is working and is preventing the virus from becoming widespread.

Although the numbers are growing the ministry is insisting swine flu is not widespread in communities and the links in almost all the cases have been identified.

The cases are still being described as mild and all affected persons are reportedly recovering well.

In its latest bulletin, the ministry is again putting a lot of emphasis on what it sees as the success of its surveillance system.

It says this system is followed by isolation of confirmed cases.

The World Health Organisation has reported that worldwide eighty-nine thousand nine hundred and twenty-one cases in one hundred and twenty-five countries have been confirmed.

There have been three hundred and eighty-two deaths.


St. Vincent and the Grenadines this week became the latest country in the region to report a swine flu case.
