"But Dean and others say people who have had symptoms of the flu, including a fever, cough, body aches and fatigue, for less than 48 hours should seek medications. "Why not use something you know works?" Dean said. "

Why not? Because, per various sources, Kaiser refuses to give even high-risk patients Tamiflu or Relenza (specifically, from experience in discussion drs about courses of action and preparedeness, those who have asthma and history of pneumonia) unless they or hospitalized and have a fever of over 102 degrees.

Why isn't there public outrage over this?

Why isn't there public outrage over this?

Mass behavior psychology anestetization.

The most of the masses even did not digit the "decisors" left many without the any existant treating medicine (relenza would follow the same mode probably)

A 35-year-old man from the western Victorian town of Colac has died in hospital with swine flu.

The Department of Human Services says the man had a number of significant underlying health issues and is believed to have died from respiratory failure.

Dr Rosemary Lester, Victoria's acting Chief Medical Officer, said the man went to Colac Hospital on Friday with flu-like symptoms.

"He was intubated and ventilated to assist his breathing and transferred to the intensive care unit at Maroondah Hospital the same day," she said.

"He arrived with an influenza-like illness and then I believe he rapidly deteriorated, his respiratory function deteriorated, and he went into shock quite quickly."

The man died on Saturday evening.

Re: Post cytokine storm / organ failure / cyanosis related stories here......

One of the cases that raises a question of cytokine storm for me is the case of Adela Chevalier, the 20-year-old who lived in Escondido and was the eighth person to die in California. Although none of the above words are used, officials are puzzled because they could not explain "why the virus quickly became fatal to a person who otherwise seemed to have been healthy." Did her immune system overlaunch and kill her? Perhaps one of our doctor members can comment on that.

Re: Post cytokine storm / organ failure / cyanosis related stories here......

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any information on the 36 year-old man from Union County, NJ, who died of H1N1
http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20090619/NEWS/90619051/1017/newsfront/Union+County+man++36++with+swine+flu+has+died++officials+say[/URL]
You see, a friend of mine knows someone whose relative died of H1N1 recently. I don't know their name, but I know that it was a man in his 30's. She told me today that they did an autopsy on him and were told that H1N1 was detected in his liver. I was interested in finding any other info online about this.
Trouble is, I am not sure if this is the same person.

Widow urges Utahns to stay alert to flu threat

Doug Dunford, 42, died Friday after spending a week at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Before the Cottonwood Heights film editor got sick with the flu, he had been in another hospital, undergoing physical therapy for a liver condition, she said. When he was released from that center, "he was so strong. ... He couldn't wait to go skiing this winter."

But for three days, he was coughing and had a hard time breathing. She took him to an emergency room when he started turning grey. She wants people to be aware of the cough and where it could lead. .......

Anyone know if there is any reference to "Grey" as opposed to "Cyanosis Blue" in 1918 Pandemic?

And I've been reading about Hugely Increased stories of Whooping Cough in Australia. I've read some lately about violent cough with H1N1. Any possibility / history of misdiagnosis between the two?

I suppose someone could confuse shades of blue for grey.

I haven't delved into them but Australia doesn't seem to be the only place where Whooping Cough has been making a comeback this year. I believe several states have reported it is well. I'm reasonably sure all states make this mandatory for schoolage children.

I haven't heard of instances of 1918 being misdiagnosed with Whooping Cough but I suppose it is possible, 1918 had a very violent cough in some people. They key would be knowing how many of the Whooping Cough cases were diagnosed clinically versus lab testing.

Swine flu fatal to local cancer nurse

Jul. 31, 2009

A cancer nurse at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael has died of the H1N1 flu, becoming the first reported health care worker in California killed by the new variant of swine flu.
"We're very concerned that a nurse died," said Jill Furillo of the California Nurses Association, adding that the death underscores the need for strong infection controls to protect nurses and patients.
Mercy San Juan does not know whether the nurse caught the flu on the job or elsewhere, but it has notified all patients who came in contact with her when she might have been infectious, said hospital spokesman Bryan Gardner.
Karen Ann Hays died July 17 of a severe respiratory infection, pneumonia and H1N1, according to her death certificate. She also had methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a staph infection that is resistant to many antibiotics.
Hays, 51, was a triathlete, skydiver and marathon runner ? and a mom who could listen for hours to minute details of video games that any other adult would tune out, said her 19-year-old son Ian Hays.
"She'd listen to everything," he said. "She basically spent her whole life giving to other people."
Her partner, Dorel Borlovan, believes she probably caught the flu on the job, partly because she was there so much and partly because he was with her the rest of the time, but never became ill.
"Everybody thinks she got it from work," he said.
He described Hays as fit and athletic and said they went regularly to the Sierra to run, cycle and fish. She usually outran him, he said.

"Influenza, when combined with pneumonia, is the fifth or sixth most common cause of death in the United States every year," said Dr. Stuart Cohen, an infectious disease expert at UC Davis School of Medicine. "You don't want to make this into a panic situation."

At the same time, he said, this flu has a disturbing twist. Even though most people with H1N1 don't get very sick, the three deaths he has seen were troubling, progressing rapidly from minor symptoms to "total respiratory compromise" within a day.

"I have a healthy respect for this virus," Cohen said. "I graduated from medical school 30 years ago, I'm not a rookie, and these people looked a lot different from the standard flu patients we see who have died."

The estabs could pushing what they want,

but this is obviously an severe pandemic with a possible cytokine storm:

51 - untypic flu sensitive age
a triathlete, skydiver and marathon runner - an extremely fit and strong immunity human being.

And the spin doctors stil make TV appearances to the people, speaking of "same as seasonal", by this inducing and suggesting milions that there is no special risk during their travelings (even in heavily infected areas) and mass events.

What the law says about? The advisors says free roamings, all were informed that this is an moderate pandemic max. 6 level, so no rights to claim about ...

There was a post a while back about MRSA and H1N1 being a deadly combination. Has anyone seen any studies done on that yet?

I don't know about studies, but this is the press release I did on the subject, with links back to the original FT thread, and some links to other sources. It's a little early for studies pertaining specifically to H1N1 and MRSA, but it's possible there may have been some on the relationship of influenza in general and MRSA.

Re: Post cytokine storm / organ failure / cyanosis related stories here......

Some additional articles:

From the CDC
As demonstrated by the cases in this report, secondary S. aureus pneumonia is a potentially catastrophic complication of influenza. S. aureus respiratory coinfections often develop into severe, necrotizing pneumonia with a relatively high case-fatality rate (33% during the influenza epidemic of 1968--1969) and rapid clinical progression (e.g., death within 24 hours after admission) (2). S. aureus pneumonia has been complicated further by the emergence of MRSA as a cause of infection among persons in the community without traditionally recognized MRSA risk factors (3). During the 2003--04 influenza season, 15 cases of influenza-associated CAP caused by MRSA and four deaths (fatality rate: 26.7%) were reported to CDC, generally in persons with no medical problems (1,4).

From Medscape:
January 31, 2008 — Healthcare professionals should be alert to the possibility of bacterial coinfection among children hospitalized with influenza and request bacterial cultures for those who are severely ill or suspected of having community-acquired pneumonia, according to a clinician communication sent today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

From CIDRAP:

Oct 7, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – The number of children who have died from a combination of influenza infection and bacterial pneumonia—in many cases due to the superbug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)—has risen sharply over the past few years, federal epidemiologists say in a new report that urges flu shots as a preventative.

Overall, the researchers say, child deaths from influenza are relatively uncommon. There were 166 between autumn 2004 and spring 2007, according to a new national reporting system, only a few more than the 153 that occurred in the harsh 2003-04 flu season and prompted the reporting system's founding. But child deaths from flu are rising, and serious complications from bacterial infections such as MRSA are playing a much larger role.

Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- A 15-year-old Brazilian girl who died on a flight yesterday to Sao Paulo from the U.S. was taking Tamiflu, the antiviral drug used to treat swine flu, O Globo reported. The teenager’s aunt said the girl was healthy when she traveled to the U.S. two weeks ago to visit Disneyworld and fell ill on July 29, the Rio de Janeiro-based newspaper reported. She visited a hospital in Orlando and was given Tamiflu, which can be prescribed for the swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus, O Globo said.
Doctors traveling on the same flight tried to revive the girl after her heart and breathing had stopped, O Globo said.

Tracking World Wide Virulence of Swine Flu

Thank you to Dutchy for this suggestion for a thread.

Please make a copy, or double post, on this thread any articles that indicate that the Swine flu virus seems to becoming more - or less - virulent.

We are particularly interested in any new symptoms like hemorrhaging.

Thank you!
