Two women died of swine flu in city hospitals Friday, taking the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) in the national capital to 28, a health department official said.
Meanwhile, Delhi reported 186 cases of swine flu -- the highest for a single day - taking the number of people affected with the virus to 5,603. Delhi Thursday reported 176 cases of swine flu.

'Two deaths were reported today (Friady). A 40-year-old woman, who was a resident of Guru Ramdas Nagar, died in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital,' Anjana Prakash, state's assistant nodal officer for swine flu cases, told IANS.

'Another woman died in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. She was 60-year-old and was a resident of Janakpuri. Both did not have any travel history. Both of them came late to the hospital and were already suffering from severe respiratory problems,' she added.

The number of people affected with the virus in Delhi is highest in the country.

The state government has decided to launch fresh awareness campaign in the capital in view of the rising number of cases.

With the onset of winter, the second wave of the flu is expected to hit many more people.

Spurt in H1N1 cases, 223 reported on Saturday

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, 223 H1N1 influenza cases, including one death, were confirmed in the capital. This is the highest number of cases reported in a day since the infection entered the city.

Though experts rule out the beginning of the ??second wave??, they advised doctors to give full-treatment dose to those who came in contact with H1N1 positive cases and were showing symptoms of the disease.

??We can?t call it a second wave. But this increase in H1N1 figure was expected during this time of the year. This is nothing but a mini wave which will infect a few clusters only. We should more such mini waves. By the time we get a second wave, close to 50-60% of the population would have developed immunity against the virus,?? said Dr VM Katoch, DG, Indian Council of Medical Research.

Of the 223 confirmed cases, 131 are children. Experts say once a case or two is tested positive at a school or college or any institution, full dose of tamiflu should be given to the rest who show clinical symptoms of H1N1 influenza. ??There is no need to test everybody. If some cases have tested positive then full dose can be given to those who are showing H1N1 symptoms. That?s the best way of dealing with this flu,?? said Dr Katoch.

The state health department attributed the high figure to awareness about the disease and more number of testing facilities.

??Now people have adequate knowledge about the disease. And with five private labs testing for H1N1, people are getting themselves tested,?? said Kiran Walia, Delhi?s health minister.

Meanwhile, one 37-year-old man died due to H1N1 influenza at Safdarjung Hospital on Friday night. His reports tested positive on Saturday. So far, 29 people have died due to H1N1 infection in the capital.

Nine swine flu deaths were reported on Sunday, including four from Rajasthan, the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) virus in India to 627, health authorities said here.

Also, 144 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious flu to 20,165.

With the four deaths, the toll in Rajasthan has gone up to 67. Two deaths were reported from Gujarat, taking the number of fatalities due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the state to 49.

Two deaths were also reported from Maharastra Sunday taking the toll in the state to 232.

One death was also reported from the national capital, taking the total toll here to 30.

The number of people affected with the virus in Delhi is now the highest in the country at 5,826 as per Saturday evening.

"One death was reported today (Friday). A 25-year-old male was brought dead to the Ambedkar Hospital," Anjana Prakash, Delhi's assistant nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

One death was also reported from the union territory of Chandigarh Saturday.

"Till date, samples from 91,192 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 21.5 percent of them have been found positive," said a statement issued here.

New cases were also reported from Rajasthan (20), Kerala (6), Haryana (14), Uttar Pradesh (six), Uttarakhand (three), Gujarat (two), Pondicherry (one) and Chhattisgarh(one).

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man with the H1N1 flu, who was on ventilator support, died while being shifted from Action Balaji Hospital to Ambedkar Hospital on Sunday. He was shifted by his relatives ??against medical advice?, according to Action Balaji, which is a designated hospital for swine flu treatment.

Sumit Talwar was admitted to Action Balaji on December 4 where he tested positive for H1N1. As his condition was critical, he was put on ventilator support. But on Sunday morning, according to hospital authorities, his father wanted to shift him to Ambedkar Hospital.

According to Dr A P Chaudhari, medical director of Action Balaji, ??They moved the patient against medical advice. We have got the necessary documents with us. We can?t stop a patient if he wishes to leave against medical advise. The family had arranged for a personal ambulance.?

The patient was declared dead at Ambedkar Hospital?s casualty ward. According to state health department officials, no official communication was made by Action Balaji Hospital either to Ambedkar Hospital or to the department about Talwar being shifted against medical advice. ??It (Action Balaji) is a designated hospital for swine flu treatment. Even if the relatives wanted to shift him, the hospital should not have allowed Leave Against Medical Advice (LAMA) and made necessary arrangements for his transfer to a government hospital, said a health official.

When contacted, J P Singh, principal secretary (health), Delhi government, said, ??The patient?s relatives should not have been allowed to take him. There is a procedure in place about shifting H1N1 influenza patients. Such patients cannot be allowed to leave a hospital like this. We will look into the matter tomorrow.? The health ministry has decided to institute an inquiry into the matter.

According to health minister Kiran Walia, ??It is a serious matter. Hospitals can?t allow such patients to be shifted in this manner. I have initiated an inquiry and we will be meeting Action Balaji Hospital authorities tomorrow.?? This is the 30th H1N1 death in the city. Meanwhile, 5826 cases of H1N1 infection had been confirmed in the capital till Saturday, of which 3402 were children.

Five more H1N1 patients died in Delhi, taking the swine flu toll in the country to 632, health authorities said Monday.

Though Delhi government authorities added only four deaths to their cumulative death figure (34), they said another person also died at Guru Teg Bahadur hospital late Sunday night. The victim was from Uttar Pradesh.

'The patient was not a resident of Delhi and we are not including the death in the cumulative total of Delhi,' Anjana Prakash, the state's assistant nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.


Of the four deaths, a nine-month infant died in St Stephens Hospital and a 52-year-old man breathed his last at the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, she said.


'Two suspected swine deaths were reported from the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital last week and were confirmed Monday. So, the four swine flu deaths takes the total to 34,' she added.


Delhi reported 198 fresh swine flu cases Monday. 'The cumulative swine flu cases in Delhi now stands at 6,171,' she said.


Though, there were no reports of fresh deaths from any other state, the health ministry said that the country reported 315 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1). Apart from Delhi, Haryana reported 39 new cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh (30 new cases).


'All the 315 cases reported during the day, four are having history of foreign travel and rest are indigenous cases,' a health ministry official said.


Over 20,000 people have been affected by the disease so far in India but majority of them have been cured.

reported every day - Monday saw 198 fresh cases - the state health department is planning to rope in more private hospitals for testing and treating facility. Meanwhile, Delhi health minister Kiran Walia ordered an inquiry into the death of 25-year-old Sumit Talwar, who died while being shifted from Action Balaji Hospital to Ambedkar Hospital on Sunday.

"A nine-month-old baby girl from Bhajanpura and a 52-year-old man from Janakpuri succumbed to H1N1 infection at St Stephen's and Mata Chanan Devi Hospital respectively on Monday. The man was on ventilator support and his reports came after his death. Of the 198 cases reported on Monday, 121 are children," said Dr Anjan Prakash, additional nodal officer, Delhi government. So far, 6171 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the city.

The state health department is now planning to get more private hospitals on board. Recently, St Stephen's Hospital was given permission to treat swine flu patients and the department is considering Sunder Lal Jain and Jaipur Golden hospitals too. "We are trying to rope in more private hospitals. But before giving permission we have to ensure they have proper infrastructure in place. Hopefully, by next week we will give permission to two more hospitals," said Walia.

An inquiry has been ordered into the death of Sumit Talwar, who died while being shifted from one hospital to another. "I have asked director, health services to submit a report on Talwar's death. He will speak to the patient's family members and Action Balaji Hospital authorities. Action would be taken if any lapses are found in the case," added Walia.

In the Indian capital, a 52-year-old woman, who was admitted at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, died of swine flu Thursday.


With this, the cumulative death figure in the city has gone up to 36, health officials said.

According to Prakash, the capital reported 170 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) Thursday. 'Of the 170 new cases on Thursday, 94 were children,' Prakash said.


With this, the total number of swine flu cases in Delhi touched 6,769 - the highest in the country.

Delhi worst affected due by swine flu

New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) The national capital continued to be the worst affected by swine flu as the total number of people infected by it till date reached the 7,019, a count above all other cities.

Meanwhile, a total of 250 positive swine flu virus cases were reported today of which 158 were of children.



"Of the total 250 positive cases, 158 were of children alone. With this, the total number of swine flu cases reported till date is 7,019 of which 4,135 cases are that of children," Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said.

Delhi is followed by Maharashtra (4,200 cases), Tamil Nadu (1,985) and Karnataka (1,724) in decreasing order.

Even today, deaths due to the virus were reported from two different hospitals as three people succumbed to the virus, taking the toll to 39.

Family of H1N1 victim blames RML Hospital for neglect

NEW DELHI: Family members of 25-year-old Sumit Talwar, a H1N1 positive patient who died while being shifted from Balaji Action Hospital to Ambedkar Hospital on December 6, blame doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for his death. They said three days before Sumit succumbed to the infection, he was taken to RML Hospital as he was showing flu-like symptoms. Despite repeated request by the victim's father, doctors didn't take his throat swab for H1N1 testing, the family members alleged.

"Sumit was down with high fever and flu-like symptoms for a few days. Then I took him to RML Hospital on December 3 to get H1N1 test done. But doctors in the hospital said it was common cold and prescribed some medicines and asked the patient to inhale steam to clear the airway," said Kewal Krishan Talwar, Sumit's father.

In Sumit's casualty registration card of RML Hospital (No: E/182585/2009), the attending doctor had written that his SpO2 level was 83%. SpO2 is a measurement of the amount of oxygen attached to the haemoglobin cell in the circulatory system. The normal level should be around 96%. "Anybody with SpO2 level (or saturation) less than 90% must be put on the ventilator or artificial oxygen support. As he was showing flu-like symptoms and 83% saturation, he should have been admitted," said a senior RML doctor.

When contacted Dr NK Chaturvedi, medical superintendent of RML Hospital said, "I have no knowledge about the case. I'll look into the matter tomorrow (Sunday)."

The next day, Sumit's condition worsened and he was admitted in Balaji Action Hospital. "Doctors at this hospital had told me that his saturation had dropped to 67% and he was put on the ventilator. Later, when Sumit tested positive for H1N1 influenza, doctors asked me to shift him to another hospital, as the hospital was not well-equipped to treat the disease," said Talwar.

When contacted, Dr AP Chaudhari, medical director of Balaji Action Hospital, said, "It is a baseless allegation. We have documents to prove that the family took him away despite medical advice against the move."

Balaji Action is one of designated hospital for H1N1 influenza. According to Delhi government sources, there was no official communication by Balaji Action to Ambedkar Hospital about Sumit's condition and that he was being transferred.

Delhi health minister Kiran Walia had ordered an inquiry into the matter after the incident was reported in Times City on December 7. "Our officials have spoken to the hospitals concerned and have taken their versions on the issue. We are yet to speak to the family. The inquiry committee is likely to submit its report by next week," said Walia.

141 people test positive for swine flu in city

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) As many as 141 swine flu cases were reported in the city today raising the number of patients infected by the disease so far to 7,459.

"Of the total 141 positive cases, 82 were children. With this, the total number of swine flu cases reported till date is 7,459 of which 4,421 cases are that of children," Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said.

So far, 40 people have died in the city due to the pandemic virus, she said.

Walia, however, said the situation is under control and the government is doing its best in providing treatment to H1N1 patients in government hospitals.

According to the WHO, India continues to report the maximum number of cases of swine flu in the south east Asian region.

India's swine flu toll reaches 707

Seven swine flu deaths were reported in India Monday, taking the toll due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 707 so far, health authorities said here.

Also, 239 new cases have been reported in the country, taking the number of people infected with the contagious virus to 21,970.


In Punjab, three deaths were reported Monday, while two deaths each were reported from the national capital and Rajasthan and one death was reported from Gujarat.


With the two more swine flu deaths in the national capital, the death toll has touched 44, officials said.


The victims were an 11-year-old girl and a 43-year-old woman. 'Both were suffering from bronchial pneumonia,' Anjana Prakash, additional nodal officer for swine flu cases in Delhi, told IANS.


'With these two deaths, the total death count in Delhi is 44,' she added.


Delhi also recorded 154 new cases of swine flu Monday, of which 88 were children. This has taken the cumulative number of swine flu cases in the capital to 7,506, Prakash said.


New cases were also recorded from Rajasthan (41), Maharashtra (23), Uttar Pradesh (22), Karnataka (16),Gujarat (10) and Haryana (8).

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) With two more deaths due to swine flu in Delhi, the toll in the disease climbed to 52 today, even as 168 more patients tested positive for the virus, taking the total number of cases in the city to 7801.

"Of the total 168 positive cases, 99 were children. With this, the total number of swine flu cases reported till date is 7,801 of which 4,596 cases are that of children," Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said.

The toll due to swine flu rose to 52 here after two deaths were reported in two different hospitals in the city.

Walia, however, maintained that the situation is under control and the government is doing its best in providing treatment to H1N1 patients in government hospitals.

In the national capital, two people died Wednesday, taking the total number of fatalities due to Influenza A (H1N1) to 48.


The victims were a 39-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man.


'With these two deaths, the total death count in Delhi is 48,' Anjana Prakash, additional nodal officer handling swine flu cases in Delhi, told IANS.


The woman was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital while the man was in the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narain Hospital.

Six swine flu deaths push India's toll to 759

At least six people, including four from Delhi, died due to swine flu Thursday, taking the toll due to Influenza A (H1N1) in the country to 759, authorities said.

With these deaths, the number of swine flu casualty went up to 52 in Delhi and 64 in Gujarat.


Though details of all victims were not available, a 25-year-old woman died due to swine flu at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here.


The woman was admitted to RML Hospital Dec 11 and died Thursday afternoon, Anjana Prakash, the additional nodal officer handling swine flu cases in Delhi, told IANS.

Delhi also recorded 131 new cases of swine flu Thursday. Of these, 72 were children. This has taken the cumulative total number of swine flu cases in the capital to 7,942, Prakash said.


Among the states, Maharashtra continues to lead the toll figure with 247 deaths. Both Karnataka and Rajasthan have lost over 100 people each.


The country also witnessed 248 new cases of influenza A (H1N1). Besides Delhi, Rajasthan reported 30 cases, Uttar Pradesh 24 cases and Maharashtra reported 16 cases Thursday.

New Delhi, December 19
With the swab sample report of a man, who died on December 16 in Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, confirming him to be a case of influenza A (H1N1) today, the cumulative tally of the disease, has reached 55 in the Capital. However, among the suspected deaths reported yesterday, only one tested positive for the viral flu.

Meanwhile, the city registered 117 fresh cases of H1N1 and 60 of which are children. With this, the total number of infected people has gone up to 8,264.
