Woman dies of suspected swine flu

Nagercoil (TN), Sep 23 (PTI) A 48-year old woman has died of suspected swine flu at the government medical college hospital here.

Officials said the woman was admitted to a private hospital here a week ago for suspected swine flu and later shifted to the medical college hospital where she died last night.

Joint Director of Medical Service Madhusudhanan told reporters today that a private laboratory had found her to be H1N1 positive. However, test results of her swab samples, already sent to Chennai, were awaited.

Two nurses of private hospital found with A(H1N1) symptoms
CHENNAI/ NAGERCOIL: Tamil Nadu recorded its fourth death caused by the A(H1N1) virus on Tuesday, when a 42-year old woman who tested positive died at Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital.

Valsala Kumari of Edaicode near Arumanai was admitted to a private hospital on September 12, according to the Director of Public Health S.Elango said. Her condition deteriorated and it was only on September 21 that the private hospital decided to go for A (H1N1) tests, he added. Once the confirmation came, she was shifted to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College at Asaripallam. Dr. Elango said, ?Our doctors found that she came at a critical phase. At this stage, even Tamiflu could not help the patient and she died on Tuesday night.? He said though private hospitals had been sensitised to the need to test patients for A(H1N1) early, such instances of neglect continue to occur, proving fatal in the case of Valsala Kumari.

A medical team headed by Deputy Director of Health Madusoodhanan visited her residence and took necessary steps to prevent an outbreak of the disease there. When the team visited the private hospital, where the deceased had initially undergone treatment, they found two nurses with symptoms of swine flu. The nurses were admitted to the Government Hospital. Samples were drawn and sent to Chennai for testing.

More than 20 persons, including a six-month old child from Rajakkamangalam, and a medical college student underwent treatment in the special ward of the hospital with symptoms of swine flu and were discharged later.

A total of 1,252 people have so far tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus in Tamil Nadu. According to sources, 35 of them are undergoing treatment in government hospitals.
