A tourist from Palermo, Alessandro Marrone, 57, born in Latina but a resident of Palermo for years, died in Kathmandu, Nepal, from complications due to the H1N1 virus, which causes the respiratory disease known as swine fever. As reported by Ansa.it, Marrone, who worked as a buyer for the Sisa Sicilia group, was part of a group of 16 travelers from different Italian cities who left to visit Nepal. His wife Giada Biondo was also with him.

After landing by plane in Bhaktapur on August 10, 10 of the travelers felt ill, including Biondo, and seven were hospitalized and then discharged for swine flu. After two days the group moved to Pokhara and there Marrone felt very ill with a fever of 41.5 degrees. On August 17, he was transported by helicopter to the hospital in Kathmandu where he was admitted with a positive test for the swine flu virus and pneumonia. According to the doctors, who calculated the incubation period, the virus would have been contracted during the flight by plane from Rome. The patient was sedated and intubated in the intensive care unit after a day but died last Tuesday.
