Key points:
  • The nuclear disaster, caused by a tsunami striking the Fukushima power plant, forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes
  • TEPCO has since been pursued in the courts by survivors of the disaster as well as shareholders
  • They argue that the disaster could have been prevented if the company's bosses had listened to research and carried out preventative measures
A Tokyo court has ordered former executives from the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant involved in the 2011 disaster to pay about 13 trillion yen ($139.96 billion) in damages.

Four ex-bosses of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) were ordered to pay the damages in a suit brought by shareholders over the nuclear disaster triggered by a massive tsunami, local media said on Wednesday.

... Lawyers for the plaintiffs hailed the ruling, and said they believed it to be the largest amount of compensation ever awarded in a civil lawsuit in Japan.

Hiroyuki Kawai, a lawyer representing shareholders, said when the suit was filed that senior managers at TEPCO must be made to pay.
