Togo provides compensation to farmers in bird flu-hit area

APA-Lome (Togo) The Togolese government has released about 50 million CFA francs to compensate farmers whose poultry had been slaughtered following the discovery of H5NI bird flu virus in a farm located in the south of the country, informed sources told APA Tuesday.
This amount has been withdrawn from the a global budget of 1.293 billion CFA francs representing the funding of a National Avian Influenza Plan jointly financed by the International Epizootic Office (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the African Development Bank (ADB) and the Togolese government (10 percent), according to a source close to Togo?s ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
For each bird slaughtered, farmers got 1,500 CFA francs, 2,000 CFA francs for meat-producing chickens, 500 CFA francs for chicks, 2,000 CFA francs for laying hens, 2,500 CFA francs for ducks and 5,000 CFA francs for turkeys.
In June, 2,505 poultry died in a farm in Sigbehoue, about 40 km east of Lome, Togo?s capital.
For security and health reasons, a technical team of the ministry slaughtered the remaining 3,069 poultry.
As part of the action to combat the epizootic, Togolese officials ordered the slaughtering of poultry within a 3-km radius around Sigbehoue. Thus, 8,000 other poultry identified in the infected area had been slaughtered and incinerated.
