Government responds promptly to typhoid cases reported in a family in Pamini
The technical services of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene have alerted a family of typhoid fever in Pamini in the canton of Nadoba, commune Kéran 3. The alert was given when members of a concession of this locality suffering from headaches and stomach aches accompanied by vomiting as well as a lack of appetite were admitted to the Nadoba Medical-Social Center, then to the Kanté CHP for treatment. Four of the cases who were in serious condition have been evacuated to the Kara University Hospital since July 27 for adequate care. Unfortunately, one patient out of the 04 died as a result of this disease.
Various investigations at the patients' homes revealed other symptomatic cases with signs of abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. These patients were quickly referred to the Kantè CHP for appropriate care.
Disease prevention and control measures are being put in place on the instructions of the top authorities in Togo.
"As soon as he was informed of the situation, the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, dispatched us, along with officials from the Kéran prefecture, to the Kara University Hospital and the Kantè CHP to offer his support to the sick and his compassion to the bereaved family. The patients underwent surgery, and the President of the Council gave instructions for rapid and free care," said the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Professor Tchin DARRE.
The Minister of Health and the delegation of Kéran executives then visited the community to assess the situation and raise awareness among the population. They emphasized, among other things, hand washing before and after using the toilet, the need to boil water before drinking it, chlorination of water and cleaning utensils with soap, and the need to avoid open defecation, the use of borehole water for drinking, and vaccination and deworming of animals and mass deworming of affected people and their families.
It should be noted that health personnel have been instructed to provide free case management according to the current protocol. Other measures have been taken, including increased surveillance by community health workers and through the collection of stool samples from patients, animals, water and food for analysis and isolation of the suspected germ.
