Food poisoning in Kpetsou: The Government reacts promptly

July 29, 2025

The population of Kpétsou canton in the Bas-Mono district in the maritime region has been the victim of serious food poisoning since Monday, July 29, 2025, which has led to the death of individuals. The health structures of the locality and its surroundings have reported the occurrence of cases of acute diarrhea in several people in the village of Kpetsou following the consumption of a food made from "cooked curdled blood" of animals, commonly known as "Houmbli".

The current situation reports 04 community deaths. Alerted, the government through the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has taken appropriate measures to deal with it. These include strengthening care, competent human resources, and the provision of inputs for adequate and rapid care. In parallel, samples were quickly taken for laboratory analysis to determine the causative germ.

"On the instructions of the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, we immediately instructed technical teams to conduct rapid and more in-depth investigations to contain the disease. Around fifty patients are currently hospitalized at the Saint Jean de Dieu Hospital in Afagnan. We have mobilized medical personnel and made medication available for free and adequate treatment of these cases," said Dr. AGBETIAFA Komivi Vovolité, Regional Director of Health, Maritime Region.

Beyond these measures taken, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Prof. Tchin DARRE, spontaneously and promptly carried out a support visit to patients suffering from food poisoning at the Saint Jean de Dieu hospital in Afagnan on the afternoon of Monday, July 28, 2025. The objective of this visit was to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the measures taken and also to support the mobilized staff.

Once on the scene, Professor Tchin DARRE expressed his satisfaction with the diligence and professionalism with which the mobilized personnel were handling the situation. He also reassured the victims' families about the urgent measures being taken to this effect. He then urged the population to spread the word so that any suspected cases should immediately go to the health center for prompt and appropriate care.

He finally conveyed the message of support and compassion of His Excellency the President of the Council to the people of Afagnan and Kpetsou in particular.

Prof. Tchin DARRE then went to the canton of Kpetsou where he also visited the local dispensary before meeting the head of the said canton, Togbui Abidi Kelanou, to whom he conveyed the message of support and compassion from the government and the President of the Council of the Republic. He insisted on the need to continue raising awareness among the population so that no case dies again for not having been to the hospital because the government has taken all measures for free patient care.

Several radio broadcasts are underway for this purpose in the region to reach a greater number of people and raise awareness of the risk.

The minister instructed the prefectural health directors to implement preventive measures be taken to raise awareness among the population.

It should be noted that the consumption of this food made from "cooked curdled blood" of animals, commonly called "Houmbli" is very concentrated in this locality.
