Health authorities have imposed total destruction of eggs and feed grain in two poultry outbreaks in Ad?tikop? and Adidogom?. The first lab results indeed reveal the presence of the H5 virus, responsible for bird flu. Samples were sent out for further investigations.

Other precautionary measures were agreed with the quarantine of the infected area and a more enhanced surveillance of markets including Lome and poultry movement ban for 1 month in the prefectures of Ago?nyiv? and Gulf .The livestock farmers whose production was shot will be compensated by the state.

Togo: cases of bird flu near the capital registered

French.xinhuanet.com 2016-08-25 8:36:20 p.m.

LOME, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) - The Togolese authorities in charge of livestock conducted Wednesday in the slaughter of infected poultry after bird flu case detected in a farm in Ad?ticop?, located twenty kilometers north of Lome, the capital.

Hundreds of chickens, guinea fowl and ducks were slaughtered and incinerated.

Time is also farmer awareness on respect for siting standards of a farm to avoid any inconvenience to the spread of H5N1.

According to the Director of Livestock, Dr. Komlan Batawui, following a mass mortality of poultry reported on August 19, the technical services have conducted analyzes in the Lom? central veterinary laboratory were positive.

He said the slaughter and incineration are the only measures that may define evil.

Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds and poultry caused by different viruses called type A. It is transmitted from poultry to poultry and to humans and can be fatal.

This is the first case of bird flu in Togo long considered a free zone.

"This killing campaign marks the beginning of a process leading to the identification and eradication of avian influenza," concludes Dr. Batawui.
