PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The number of flu cases in the state shot up this past week and it's now widespread in Arizona.

The flu is one of the reasons a valley toddler is in a medically induced coma at the hospital, because earlier this week, she came down with the H1N1 flu virus.

2 1/2 year-old Shiann was born with a birth defect, so she's already extremely vulnerable to viruses.

As we've seen in the past, the H1N1 strain has proven to be deadly even for healthy people.
Doctors are treating the toddler with more than a dozen different medications that's why they put her in a coma. All her parents can do, is wait and pray for her to pull through this.
