To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

AlaskaDenise

In Memoriam
Who is studying WHY perfectly healthy people are dying from this strain, while many others have mild cases?

Which scientists, universities, etc. are trying to provide an explanation to this perplexing phenomenon?

Is anyone?

They've known about this for 4 months and I'd expect there would be studies underway. Lack of sequences cannot be used as an excuse.

We cannot wait 80 years, or 10 years, or 5 years, or even 10 months. We need answers NOW.

We don't want a 20-20 hindsight report 5 years from now.

Is this problem getting a Katrina response?

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

All evidence points to an unregulated cytokine storm immune response against the virus.

Could you supply a link to studies done with novel H1N1?

Does that study prove why people in the same family respond so differently?

The recent Lanchaster deaths - one brother had a mild case, while the other died overnight. WHY? I doubt that is only due to any one nutrient.

Even the experts continue to say they are baffled as to why perfectly healthy people can resond so differently. So where are the current studies to find out why? We are not discussing 1918 - they have a large living breathing supply of materials to work with - so who is doing what studies to discover exactly why people with the same exposures diet, etc. respond so differently>

Ask yourself why Alaska has the most widespread influenza at this point in the summer of 2009
Alaska does not have a higher rate of flu thant other places, in fact we have only one death (case/death similar to Wyoming). We get lots of sun in the summer. While the UV number may not be similar to Hawaii, in the summer the sun is up far longer. If anything, there may be more people in Wyoming and Alaska who don't spend their time in office cubicles, but rather outdoors.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

Hello,

You have not been monitoring the CDC's weekly update on influenza. The only US States which have widespread influenza are Maine and Alaska.........

I do monitor Alaska's cases. Current activity as stated on CDC reports doesn't indicate a worse flu outbreak in Alaska, it just indicates the timing. If you look at the beginning of the outbreak, you'd see that Alaska was behind the rest of the nation in getting it's first cases. Alaska has only one death - that's pretty good. Also, our flu season is always delayed as compared to the rest of the US - see charts posted under Alaska.

#2: "Dermatologists who have warned against sun exposure for 40 years would look like fools and face lawsuits"

I don't think so. Seems that their time is truly came now, after the 40 years.

Taking in consideration the good merits of vitamin D3, and the (once) natural sunrays exposures for mileniums, I could asure you that in the heavy sunrayed areas the sunrays are so painfuly powerfull, that even the non-sensitive groups of peoples tends to avoid them during the most high sun daily period.

Is it the above due to the many ruinings and thicknesses created in the earth radiations shielding layer worldwide, or to other reasons also, I don't enter.

And now we have a solar minimum ...

I agree that outdoor recreational activities and sun expositions, are important and good for the health, but if conducted mostly early morning and late afternoon, at least in heavy insulated areas.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

I think over the years we had the tendency to look so much at viruses that we forgot to look at the Host and of his intakes in liquids and solids and from witch environment it comes.

Already few months ago it was written that because of prior mining activies a region of Fairbanks was goin to be harshly hurt by H1N1 because of the arsenic levels in their bodys.

We warned to get selenium supplement to purge the body of its arsenic.

It was written AD.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

About arsenic levels: http://grc.engineering.cf.ac.uk/research/proj.php?nostring=&item=45

The most affected countries by arsenic presence in drinking water are: Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Chile, China, Hungary, Mexico, Peru, the United States of America and some countries in the South-East Asia Region.

Arsenic via drinking water in Mexico represents a great problem of human health due to its toxic effects.

There are serious problems in many Mexican regions, mainly in the north part of the country. More than eight states situated at the north part of Mexico are gravely affected, such as; Comarca Lagunera, Zimapan, Rio Grande, The Yaqui Valley, Tamaulipas, Villa de la Paz. Millions of people are being affected by arsenic and heavy metal contamination in those regions.

While this thread is not about Alaska, we need to clarify these statistics. If you look at Alaska's testing results, you'd see that the level of influenza is rapidly declining.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

To repeat the original question - has anyone heard of any current studies to find out why perfectly healthy people can have such dramatically different H1N1 outcomes? - either an almost undetectible mild case or severe with possibly death.

If we knew the reason for this perplexing difference, or even some preliminary study results, then those deaths might be reduced.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

Genome sequencing is supposed to get much less expensive soon, and maybe that will lay the groundwork for this type of effort.

I'm not really up on this, but I think the 'Personal Genome Project' has a goal of personalizing medicine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Genome_Project

That to me was the big promise of genetics, not survival of the fittest, especially as in 'if you get a side-effect, the heck with you; you are unfit.' I think it will take public pressure to get funding into the area, since mass solutions are more profitable.

This resurfaced about vaccines. I wonder if some of the mechanisms would apply to a regular infection and work to keep it mild???

Oral intake of Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 enhances the effects of influenza vaccination.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the coadjuvant capability of oral consumption of the breast-milk-isolated strain Lactobacillus fermentum (CECT5716) for an anti-influenza vaccine. METHODS: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled human clinical trial including 50 volunteers (31 male and 19 female) was performed to address the immunologic effects of an intramuscular anti-influenza vaccine in adults (33.0 +/- 7.7 y old). Fifty percent of volunteers received an oral daily dose of methylcellulose (placebo) or probiotic bacteria (1 x 10(10) colony-forming units/d) 2 wk before vaccination and 2 wk after vaccination. RESULTS: Two weeks after vaccination there was an increase in the proportion of natural killer cells in the probiotic group but not in the placebo group. The vaccination induced an increase in T-helper type 1 cytokine concentrations and in T-helper and T-cytotoxic proportions in both groups; however, the probiotic group showed a significant higher induction in some of these parameters. Regarding the humoral effects, induction of antibody response in the placebo group could not be detected. In the case of the probiotic group, a significant increase in antigen specific immunoglobulin A was detected. Although an increase in total immunoglobulin M was observed, changes in anti-influenza antigen specific immunoglobulin M were not observed. The incidence of an influenza-like illness during 5 mo after vaccination (October to February) was lower in the group consuming the probiotic bacteria. CONCLUSION: Oral administration of the strain L. fermentum CECT5716 potentates the immunologic response of an anti-influenza vaccine and may provide enhanced systemic protection from infection by increasing the T-helper type 1 response and virus-neutralizing antibodies.

The related links articles are good also. One makes the point that difference strains of probiotics act on the immune system in different ways, i.e., protect against different viruses. So the lesson is - eat yogurt with a variety of strains.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

Be careful about eating any high risk food if ill with the flu. I wondered about that in the case where one family member had mild illness, and one severe. People in the same family are not always eating the same diet. When I was reading wondering what is happening with the hemorrhagic illness in dogs, I found a report of a dog that had hemorrhagic pneumonia and e. coli was found it its lungs. So if my immune system is suppressed by the swine flu, I'd only eat low pathogen risk foods.

Note this regarding the Mexico City deaths. Think of that added to lungs already inflamed in those with a strong immune response.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

What is high risk about yogurt?

.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

Ooops! That did look like I was saying that but I was not thinking yogurt was high risk. Sounds good from that study as far as the immune system.

I was thinking along the lines of undercooked burgers, take home stuff from a salad bar, and unpasteurized dairy. (Not that I think there is anything wrong with that when healthy - but if you are down with the flu, it might be different.)

Don't want to sound like a Howard Hughes type. :) Just wondering about those different outcomes in the same family.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

I'm glad it's just my misunderstanding. :)

There is so much research showing the benefits of probiotics, I thought that might be a factor in the oddly different outcomes.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

I've often wondered if drinking Coke or coffee (both my favorites) can temporarily lower the pH in your mouth/throat; making it less favorable for viruses and such.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

A google translation, edited a little of an advice from the Dutch Food Authority.

They issued this advice after a series of deaths in a probiotics trial with elderly with pancreas disease or something, forgot the details.

I would not eat that stuff in a situation when your immune system is having a bad time.

Advice Agency Risk Assesment of Oral Probiotics

June 22, 2009 - Advice

There are currently no indications that the regular consumption of probiotics by healthy
people is risky .

The outcome of the "Propatria" research into the effect of
probiotics in patients with pancreatitis does not lead to change this position.

Risk groups such as people with a weakened immune system or serious intestinal disorders,
should exercise caution in the use of probiotics.

The effects of the use of
probiotics by pregnant women and infants in the long term effects are not sufficiently investigated
to take a decision can be made.

Research on possible risks of using
probiotics by very young children and pregnant women seem so desirable.

The strains which
probiotics on the market have generally called a "history of safe use" and
therefore not formally assessed safety.

New strains and known strains a
component of new products destined for vulnerable groups, one would
safety must undergo as part of the previous existing regulations.

Re: To Influenza Scientists: Where are the current studies on why H1N1 kills healthy people????

Considering that acidophilus is in mother's milk, I'm surprised they would not recommend it for young children. I do know that yogurt shouldn't be given to newborns, but by the time they'd be drinking regular milk some, it's okay. You can get acidophilus to put in baby's bottles if they're not drinking mom's milk.

Regarding intestinal disorders - it is recommeded for some - search through PubMed to see all the studies.

remember that acidophilus is naturally in our guts and thing like antibiotics and alcohol kill it.
