Three more die in Ontario from Swine Flu, 86 deaths in Canada
TORONTO ? Three more Ontario residents have died from Swine Flu in two days to take the province?s death toll to 28, according to a report published by the public health agency of Canada.
As of Oct. 14, Ontario had reported 25 deaths with no further bulletins reporting additional deaths. However, a new bulletin issued by the Canadian public health agency says the three additional deaths occurred between Oct. 20 and 11 a.m. EDT on Thursday.
The Swine Flu outbreak has intensified in Ontario, Alberta and B.C. in the past three weeks. The latest deaths reported in Ontario take Canada?s Swine Flu fatalities to 86.
Since the start of the Swine Flu outbreak in April, 28 people have died in Ontario, 27 in Quebec, 9 in B.C., 8 in Alberta, 7 in Manitoba, 5 in Saskatchewan and one each in Nunavut and Nova Scotia.
B.C. sentinel physicians have reported historic peaks in the number of patients reporting influenza like illness and medical services plan billings for ILI have also broken records.
A B.C. Children?s Hospital doctor estimated that 50 to 60 children per day are being brought to the emergency department with flu like symptoms assumed to be caused by the H1N1 virus.
A report issued by the Ontario government for the 25 deaths reported by the province up to Oct. 14 showed that 12 males and 13 females ranging in age from 6 to 81 years had died from laboratory confirmed Swine Flu.
?Of the fatal cases, 80% (20/25) occurred in individuals over the age of 40 years. Among cases that have died, the most frequently reported symptoms are fever (23), cough (19), and shortness of breath (19),? said the government report.
?Among the 25 confirmed cases that have died, 22 (88%) had underlying chronic medical conditions reported, compared to 68% (276/407) of all hospitalized cases,? said thereport by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
Most provinces will begin offering vaccines starting Monday.
