Ajay Khape Posted: Friday , Aug 07, 2009 at 0507 hrs Pune:

Three days after city girl Reeda Shaikh became the country?s first H1N1 casualty, the Sassoon General Hospital in Pune today confirmed that a 35-year old man, who tested positive for the swine flu virus, had been moved to its intensive care unit and was on a ventilator.

The patient, a pharmacist from the Hadapsar area of the city, is in critical condition. He was admitted to a private hospital in Hadapsar on Wednesday and a sample sent to the National Institute of Virology for testing.

?The patient has a heart ailment and has now tested positive for the H1N1 virus. He was admitted at 8.30 pm to the quarantine ward that was set up only today,? said Dr Arun Jamkar, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital. ?The condition of the patient is critical but stable and a team of doctors are now treating him.?
Relatives of the patient could not say how he contracted the virus.

Swine flu: 2 more patients critical in Pune
Updated on Friday, August 07, 2009, 11:07 IST Tags:Swine flu, H1N1 influenza A, Pune
Zeenews Bureau

Pune (Maharashtra): The city of Pune is fast emerging as the epicenter of swine flu outbreak in the country, with two more patients reported to be critical and on ventilator support on Friday.

The two patients ? a 36-year-old Ayurveda doctor and a 35-year-old pharmacist ? have both tested positive for swine flu or H1N1 influenza A virus and are admitted to government-run Sassoon General Hospital. Both are in critical but stable condition, doctors said. A definite report on their condition is expected later in the day, they added.

The World Health Organisation has already declared the swine flu outbreak as a global pandemic.

India?s first death from the virus too was reported in this city, which has of sorts led to panic here with people thronging to hospitals to get themselves tested for the virus as a precautionary measure. The government has, however, assured that there was nothing to panic and that everything was under control of the civic authorities.

However, the number of positive cases has been rising steadily here and the total currently stands at 129.

The 35-year-old pharmacist had tested positive at a private hospital last night but was later shifted to the Sassoon General Hospital. The Ayurveda doctor was directly admitted to Sasoon.

Elsewhere, two cases have been reported in Delhi and NCR. While a sixth-class student at Delhi's Sanskriti School tested positive for the virus, one from Noida's Amity University too has been diagnosed with swine flu.

Sanskriti School has been closed following the positive test result.

Ayurveda doc critical after delay
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Mumbai, Aug. 7: An ayurvedic physician from Yerwada near Pune is critically ill with swine flu, 10 days after falling sick, apparently because of delayed treatment.

Babasaheb Mane, 35, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, was admitted to Pune?s Sassoon Hospital today in a critical stage, doctors said.

?He was immediately put on ventilator. Only a miracle can save him,? said Dr Vijay Sonawane of Sassoon, blaming ?delayed treatment?.

Mane?s relatives said he fell ill 10 days ago and after a couple of days of self-medication with ayurvedic medicines and common allopathic drugs, his condition worsened.

?He was taken to Inlaks hospital in Pune?s Camp area ? he worked there part-time. They sent his swab for testing,? said Mane?s elder brother Deepak. His results came last evening.

?A lot of foreigners visiting Pune come to his nursing home for treatment. He could have contracted the disease from them...,? Deepak said.

?His wife Aparna, too, is down with swine flu. Since there was no delay in detection in her case, she is recovering and doctors there say she will be okay.?
