A man from Rochdale, who had existing health problems, has died from swine flu at Rochdale Infirmary.

He is the third man from Greater Manchester to have died from the disease recently.

Two men from Oldham, had also died after suffering from the H1N1 virus at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Health bosses say they also had underlying health conditions.

The three deaths are the first from the virus in the region this winter.

Rochdale's director of public health Dr Jane Rossini, said: "It is with regret I confirm one person from the Rochdale borough has died at the Rochdale Infirmary, with swine flu as a part of the cause of death.

"He had other long term health issues. I am saddened by this event here in the borough."

Health bosses are now urging pensioners, pregnant women and other vulnerable people to be vaccinated after a poor uptake of the flu jab.
