Third Lee County camper has swine flu
By Chris Umpierre ? cumpierre@news-press.com ? August 3, 2009
A south Fort Myers summer camp may have a second case of swine flu.
A second camper at Wa-Ke-Hatchee Park Recreation Center has tested positive for the virus, but it hasn't been confirmed by the Center for Disease Control, said David Harner, acting deputy director of Lee County Parks and Recreation.
Wa-Ke-Hatchee Recreation Center and Estero Recreation Center off Corkscrew Road each reported their first swine flu cases July 27. Despite the additional case at Wa-Ke-Hatchee, Harner said both camps will be open as scheduled today.
The camps each have 200 children ages 6 to 13 and 50 teenagers starting at age 13. Harner said it would take a significant swine flu outbreak for the county to close the camps.
"If there was a large outbreak at the center, I could see the county maybe considering that," Harner said. "But I just don't see that happening at the moment. It's still something you have to be careful of."
Harner said Wa-Ke-Hatchee Recreation Center and Estero Recreation Center were cleaned over the weekend.
"It was typical cleaning we've been doing for months," Harner said. "We're prepared for this. Even before (swine flu) hit our camps we've been training for it. We've been getting ready for this since February."
