These 12 Graphs Show Mask Mandates Do Nothing To Stop COVID

While I still feel masks have some value indoors or while standing around in crowds or having conversations outdoors, seeing that hikers are now mandated to wear masks in national parks on ALL trails I feel that we have entered the neurosis zone. That is just my personal opinion and not that of the forum.

No matter how strictly mask laws are enforced nor the level of mask compliance the population follows, cases all fall and rise around the same time.

Masks have become a political tool and a talisman. When COVID-19 hit, governments panicked and created enormous fear. The Centers for Disease Control currently estimates a COVID-19 survival rate of 99.99 percent for people younger than 50, but the damage created by the panic was too great to undo.
It is likely that some politicians eventually realized their mistake and needed a way to back-pedal without admitting their lockdowns were a policy disaster. Their solution was for people to put any old piece of cloth across their face and magically believe that it’s okay to go out shopping again.
Masks are not merely a small inconvenience. They have inadvertently become a key impediment to returning to a more normal life, a desirable goal for those seeking to twist the pandemic for political and electoral purposes...

I think masks are effective in many situations but requiring them on all federal properties outdoors (like a park) is a bit nutty.

It is a shame that COVID-19 has become so political. Everyone needs to assess their situation and act accordingly.

Masks, alone, will not stop you from getting a respiratory disease. They are only one tool in the prevention box.

I wear masks. I am high risk and this is my decision for me. But..it is not the only thing I do. I do not go to any crowded events, for instance.

Sharon,

I think you are wise avoiding crowds as long as you can. I was listening to a radio show recently and the host said he had been at church talking to a friend there after the service. It was a responsible, socially distanced, masked situation. The friend had been extremely careful in following guidelines since he had some health issues. But generally he was fine and fully functioning. Two days later he was reported to have died of COVID. Maybe there was more to it, but that is all he knew.

It is extremely important for people to realize that no one preventative technique works alone. None of them do.

The fact is that COVID-19 is a contagious disease that is mostly spread through human to human contact. So logically - the less human contact - the less spread.

This, however, is very hard to achieve because we are very social animals. In fact, with no natural defenses like a thick coat of fur or super hearing like a dog (for instance), our social nature is necessary for survival. We survive only by forming a pack of other humans around us.

So how do we address our instinctual need for social contact and lessen our chances of infection? By a layering of protections.

This layering can include: masking, less social contacts and in smaller groups, maybe some vitamin d supplementation like the UK government recommends, losing some weight to below obese level, properly addressing any chronic health conditions, more care in multifamily settings like routine cleaning of the elevator buttons, more care in the office setting, cleaning grocery cart handles, etc.

I think we all have to go back to the logic of the situation - how this disease is spread and how to impede that process.

I had a summer cabin in northern Quebec for many years. It was country. At night there were no street lights. Someone there pointed out to me that each time I ventured out at night to attend a dinner party alone I was increasing my odds of an accident with other drivers and large animals (like deer and moose). Their point was that it was basically a numbers game and that each time I took the risk to drive on unlit country roads at 11p.m. I was cumulatively increasing my chances of being involved in an accident. As there are very few restaurants in the country most people had dinner parties where alcohol was served. It was terrific fun. People recited their own poetry and gave mini concerts. Most people were up from Montreal for the weekends so there was a lot of interesting conversation.

To lessen my chances of an accident on vaguely familiar country roads I did the following: I did not drink even one glass of wine at the dinner parties, I left no later than 9:30 p.m., I slowed down and was very careful around known animal crossings, and I was selective in the number of dinner parties that I attended. I had one near miss with a deer where I had to do some avoidant driving, and no events with any human drivers in 12 years.

So this is what I am suggesting now. COVID-19 prevention is a numbers game. The more layering you do consistently, the more you protect yourself.

Northern Quebec must be gorgeous in the summer. You were wise to avoid even one drink before driving. I wish that were a law here in the US, or even just guidance. With rideshares available now that would not hurt the hospitality industry.
