Airport mobilizes against bird flu

THE Manila International Airport Authority has mobilized its medical unit to guard against the possible entry of passengers suspected to be carriers of the dreaded bird flu virus.
The admission by Hong Kong health authorities that a 59-year old woman who recently traveled to mainland China had contracted the bird flu has prodded local airport authorities to be on alert.
MIAA general manager Jose Honrado said thermal scanners are in place at all entry and exit gates of the three NAIA terminals to screen passengers and detect possible carriers.
Dr. Augusto Rillo, head of the MIAA-Medical Division, explained that they do immediate assessment and evaluation when scanners detect high body temperatures?38 degrees Celsius or higher?among passengers.
?If there is a strong possibility that the patient has bird flu, we put him on quarantine and send him to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, a dedicated hospital for these cases,? Rillo said.
