The pictures have grabbed the world by the heart. Tiny heads with wizened faces that look older than they should.

Brazil?s surge in babies born with a condition known as microcephaly has turned global attention to an outbreak of Zika virus, which is suspected to have caused a spike in the cases. On Monday, the World Health Organization declared the severe health complications associated with Zika to be an international public health emergency.

But even as we?re flooded with new information about Zika, the truth is very little is known about the virus, and scientists, public health leaders, and others are scrambling to learn more.
