Given the web address, and the Chinese language, and the mention of a CDC (and not a Ministry of Health), I believe this is Taiwan.

Boot camp sees worst H1N1 outbreak

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A military training facility in central Taiwan reported a collective flu outbreak involving 374 out of 2,700 recruits as a result of the A(H1N1) virus or the seasonal H3N2 flu virus, according to health authorities yesterday. Of those that showed flu-like symptoms, 81 who took the rapid influenza diagnostic test tested positive for influenza A, and labs confirmed the presence of both aforementioned strains, said health officials.

As of last night, seven of the cases were confirmed A(H1N1) infections whereas two were of the H3N2 subtype, noted local media.

Symptoms reportedly included fever, cough, sore throat and muscle cramps, said CNA reports.

The training camp is reportedly Cheng Gung Ling boot camp, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) refused to confirm reports, said the media.

But Wang Ren-hsian, the point man for the infectious disease medical network under the Department of Health (DOH) in central Taiwan, was cited as acknowledging that the flu eruption indeed took place at Cheng Gung Ling.

This is the most extensive group contagion to date, health officials noted.

According to Lin Ding, the deputy director general for the CDC, the agency does not eliminate the possibility of one person contracting both of the rampantly spreading flu strains and will not rule out the likelihood of the situation flaring up at the boot camp. But all of the cases thus far are mild bouts of the disease and all of the cases that tested positive for the virus were given the antiviral drug Tamiflu, Lin added. Those that tested negative but showed symptoms are urged to administer proper self health management and protection, Lin said.

He also underscored the close monitoring of the progress at the training facility by the CDC and the cooperation of military officers with health authorities in enforcing environmental hygiene as well as advocating health education.

The infected recruits are sequestered from the rest of the group and are barred from leaves and visits from relatives, officials said.

There is no need at present to send the remaining healthy men home, officials added.

Meanwhile, Lin also confirmed another collective outbreak that took place at Central Police University.

Lin put out rumors that the academy had shut down as a result of the flu and pointed out that the closing was due to the dispatch of students to assist with typhoon relief efforts in southern parts of the island.

The CDC said nine cases of group contagion had been reported in the past four days, bringing the total to 43. The number of severe flu infections had also risen to 25, including three patients who were still receiving intensive medical care.

The agency placed the estimate at 9,000 infections seen in the last week, said local media
