ECDC DIRECTOR’S PRESENTATION

The importance of seasonal influenza vaccination

Just over a year ago, the ENVI Committee held an expert workshop on the lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

The Director-General of DG SANCO was there, the Regional Director of WHO was there, I was there – and so was the Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency. The ENVI members had a lot of questions for us. And many of those questions related to vaccination. Some of them were very specific to the pandemic vaccines. But other raised more general issues about influenza vaccination.

- Do we really need to vaccinate people against influenza every year?

- Is it worth the money?

- Is it really safe?

The purpose of today’s workshop is to try to answer some of those questions.
