Abstract

It has been considered for a long time that, unlike bacteria, viral replication cannot be halted by small-molecule compounds without affecting host-cell functions because of its innate association with the cell function. However, steady progress in antiviral chemotherapy has been made, starting from the discovery of the truly selective anti-herpes agent acyclovir. The discovery of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 as the causative agent of AIDS has dramatically accelerated the development of novel antiviral compounds. Currently, highly potent and selective inhibitors are also available in clinic for the treatment of influenza virus and hepatitis virus B and C infections.
