The H1N1 Causes Rise in Maternal Deaths

In 2007 killed 24 women at gestation, in 2009 the figure rose to 171, warned the Health DepartmentMaternal mortality was increased six times during 2009, when compared with the previous two years due to human influenza virus.
While in 2007 death of 24 pregnant women and in 2008 30 from influenza and pneumonia, the court on 9 December last year the number increased to reach 171 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Patricia Uribe Z??iga, director of the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health, explained that following the emergence of new viruses in April, had an impact on maternal deaths, for a pregnant woman with influenza A H1N1 has six times greater chance of dying than other women of similar age are not pregnant.
It happens, she said, because all pregnant women have a decrease in respiratory capacity and in its defense system, making them more susceptible to respiratory problems.
That is why pregnant women are of priority groups for vaccination A H1N1. In fact, they are included so that, alongside the health personnel were the first to receive the vaccine. The National Immunization Council agreed to "remove" the vaccine for pregnant women so that each one has doses available on request, Uribe said.
Starting in November, with the arrival of the first 865 thousand doses the Health Ministry made available to women in the third trimester of pregnancy A H1N1 vaccine. In December opened for pregnant women at any stage of gestation.
As of 4 January, however, only 120 thousand pregnancies had come to health centers to implement, which represents a small percentage, since it is estimated that each year in our country almost two million women are expecting a child .
"Although the pregnant woman is completely healthy, simply because pregnancy increases the chances of complications and death are to be vaccinated, the vaccine is completely safe, there is no risk to the baby," said Dr. Patricia Uribe
According to the expert, the court this week, only 19 percent of pregnant women were vaccinated.
"There is no risk, would not expose the federal Health Secretary (Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos), and the entire international community to anybody, especially to pregnant women to a vaccine that has risks, there are always adverse affects, but there is minimal ; pregnant women right now there are no records, "said Uribe.
He insisted that the new virus vaccine for pregnant women can make the difference between life and death.
"A young woman is of childbearing age need not die from influenza, pneumonia and by themselves are taking a higher mortality, so it's a priority group. Pregnant women beg them to get vaccinated is to save his life, "he cried.
In this context he noted that not only mass scale has to promote vaccination among pregnant women, but by word of mouth.
