The death of a polar bear in Svalbard will be tested for bird flu

A polar bear that was found dead in Svalbard's Petunia Bay earlier this summer will be tested for bird flu, Svalbardposten writes on July 26.
The study will be carried out by the Norwegian Polar Institute in cooperation with the Governor of Svalbard.

"There were no visible external injuries that could reveal anything about the cause of his death ," Governor Inspector Ragnar Sjolset said in an email to the newspaper.

Cultural heritage manager Bodil Paulsen, under the governor of Svalbard, says one of the reasons they are testing the polar bear for bird flu is because two dead foxes were found next to the polar bear.

“This is also due to the fact that bird flu has now been found around Svalbard, so we are interested to know if the dead polar bear had the same virus ,” she says.
