According to Rotan Superintendent Kent Ruffin, Michael Soliz became sick several weeks ago. Soliz was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, where he was in critical condition. After 3 weeks, Ruffins said his family took him off life support.

Along with the swine flu, the boy also had pneumonia and staph infection.

A 5-year-old kindergartner from Otay Mesa died of swine flu, San Diego County public health officials said Wednesday.

The girl, whose name was withheld, was sick for 48 hours before she went to a hospital Saturday, where she died within an hour, Dr. Wilma Wooten said.

Dr. John Bradley, an infectious diseases specialist at Rady Children's Hospital, said the girl did not have any underlying medical conditions but was much sicker than most patients when she arrived at the emergency room.

She cried, passed out, and her heart stopped, Bradley said. Doctors resuscitated her, but she had a severe infection in her heart, the doctor said.

"Her heart just wasn't going to work anymore," Bradley said. "This was a very tragic occurrence."

Wooten asked parents to keep their children home from school if they have symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Schools and employers should also send home anyone who develops such an illness.

"This is a wakeup call for parents to get their children vaccinated," Wooten said. "We expect and anticipate more deaths will occur, not just H1N1 but seasonal flu."

The girl became the 24th resident of San Diego County to die of the H1N1 flu strain, officials said. Three non-residents have died and 332 people have been hospitalized because of the new strain, which has disproportionately hit younger people.

People with underlying medical conditions who experience flu symptoms should immediately contact their doctor.

The federal Centers for Disease Control says 81 children have died from swine flu in the United States, most with underlying health issues that contributed to the disease.

Monroe County child dies of H1N1

SPARTA (WKOW) -- Monroe County health officials have confirmed that young girl has died of the H1N1 influenza virus.

The 21-month-old girl was from Sparta.

The county would not release any more details about the victim or what lead to her death. But health officials emphasize swine flu can be especially dangerous for young children, along with anyone with a compromised immune system or a chronic illness.

The girl's death is the ninth in Wisconsin this year. Swine flu cases have been reported in 52 of the state's 72 counties. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized since September 1.

CASHTON, Wis. (AP) - A family member has identified the victim of swine flu in Monroe County as a 1-year-old child from Cashton.
Family tell WKBT-TV in La Crosse that Aberianna Dunnum died Sunday. She would have been two in January. A funeral service is scheduled Friday morning at Presbyterian Church in Galesville.
The Monroe County Health Department reported a swine-flu related death in a news release Thursday, but provided no further details.
Swine flu cases have now been reported in 52 of Wisconsin's 72 counties and led to 26 hospitalizations since Sept. 1. The swine flu has led to two deaths this fall, including the latest, and nine this year.

The Horizon School Division issued a news release Wednesday stating that although a Wynyard Composite High School student tested positive for H1N1, Saskatoon Health Region officials have not conclusively determined that the death occurred due to complications from the illness.
REGINA ? In an attempt to quell rumours and calm fears, the Horizon School Division confirmed a Wynyard Composite High School student, who had contracted the H1N1 virus, died last week.
The school division issued a news release Wednesday stating that although the youth tested positive for H1N1, Saskatoon Health Region officials have not conclusively determined that the death occurred due to complications from the illness.
"We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family,'' said Horizon School Division communications manager Ken Sogge, who noted division administrators only learned of the situation a couple of days ago.
The teenage boy, who died Oct. 8, was the second student in the school division to test positive for the virus. On Oct. 5 the Horizon School Division issued a new release advising the public one of its students had tested positive for the virus, however, the school was never identified.
"These are totally separate cases,'' he said.
While provincial health officials and the school division have not released the 16-year-old boy's name, friends have created a memorial wall on Facebook in his honour. One posting on the social network claimed the teen died from H1N1 while another said he was stricken by severe pneumonia.
"We put out the news release, in preparation, because we anticipated people were going to be asking questions and there were some decisions that needed to be made. So we tried to get ahead of the game,'' said
The school division said it will continue following the pandemic influenza plan which is posted on its website (http://hzsd.ca) and will continue to follow the lead of health care professionals. The division is working closely with each of the health regions and other community partners in order to minimize the effects of the virus and implement immunization plans.
Schools in the division will remain open and will continue to operate. However, after consulting with the Saskatoon Health Region and the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association, the school division administration decided as a precautionary measure to cancel this weekend's provincial cross-country racing meet in Wynyard and a number of local events.
All school caretakers and maintenance staff have been instructed to step up cleaning and disinfecting high contact surfaces in their buildings and students and staff are reminded of the importance of handwashing and personal hygiene.

Wagar said the girl was between the ages of 13 and 17. Federal laws prevent state officials from identifying the hospital, doctor or patients? names or the patient?s age, Wagar said.

?That is another reason we hold off and say we need to figure out if it was a flu death,? Wagar said.

Wagar said if it turns out the girl had H1N1 flu, a pediatric flu investigation will be conducted and a report will be sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

?It?s very unusual? to have a flu investigation conducted, Wagar said.

Charla Baker, the administrator of the LaClede County Health Department, said her office was notified of the death around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Her office hopes to receive a written medical report Friday morning, she said.

When 5-year-old Alitza Ortiz Sanchez arrived at a local hospital emergency room last week, she wasn't suffering from some of the most common flu symptoms, her mother said Thursday.

In fact, Sanchez had been diagnosed with a urinary infection the day before by a doctor in Tijuana. She had a persistent headache and purplish swelling around her eyes, but no fever, sore throat, cough or runny nose.
?We didn't think it was the flu,? said her mother, Itzya Sanchez, 29.
A test conducted after Alitza arrived at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego revealed that Alitza was infected with the H1N1 virus, but the results arrived after the girl had suffered the first of what would be four heart failures.

Alitza died early Saturday.
Sanchez and Alitza's father, Miguel Ortiz, were driving to Tijuana on Thursday afternoon for a wake. Most of their relatives live in that city.
Alitza will be buried there Friday, wearing a red princess dress from the movie ?Beauty and the Beast.?

Houston Teen With Swine Flu Dies

The Houston Health Department reports a 16-year-old Dobie High School junior died of a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus. This brings the total number of deaths in the Houston area to 12.

The deaths cover all age groups. The latest one is particularly tough because it affects a whole school.

For weeks family members didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary. They believed Jose Sepulveda, 16, was just fighting an upper respiratory infection.

"He really didn't have any bad symptoms, just a dry cough, and to us we just thought it was his asthma," said Cynthia Sepulveda, Jose's mother.

But his mom soon learned there was something else terribly wrong. Around October 4th, Jose could hardly breathe, and his fingertips had turned purple. He wound up at Texas Children's Hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and eventually swine flu.

"While he was unconscious, asleep, we would tell him everyday all day we were there and that we loved him," said Sepulveda.

Wednesday night, her son died. The H1N1 vaccine wasn't available before Jose got sick.

"While we want to make sure people with asthma and other conditions are protected and taken care of, everyone needs to take appropriate precautions. This virus is hitting everyone pretty hard," said Kathy Barton, Houston Health Department.

Barton says people with underlying health problems should call their doctor to see if and when they can get the vaccine.

"Be persistent. We feel bad because maybe we should have taken him sooner when his temperature was so high," said Sepulveda.

Health leaders are seeing more absences among high school students compared with lower grade levels. In the days ahead they expect to see more deaths.

Sepulveda says her son loved animals, his church and his family. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The swine flu virus may have claimed a second victim in the Fort Worth school district.

The Fort Worth ISD reported this week that a student became ill and last attended school on Oct. 9. The district did not identify the school or the student.

KDFW-TV reported the girl was 4-year-old Yeimi Sierra Reyes. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office said the girl died Wednesday but did not list a cause of death.

The school district said in a statement that it had no information regarding the cause of death but that custodial staff was sanitizing the school. "This step was taken strictly as a measure of assuring our parents, staff and students that we are mindful of their safety in all situations," the school district said.

KDFW-TV reported that Yeimi began experiencing flu-like symptoms Monday, including fever, chills and difficulty breathing. The girl?s family told the television station that she had no underlying medical conditions.

In September, a Fort Worth ISD student died of swine flu. The family of Chloe Lindsey, a 14-year-old at Leonard Middle School, said the girl had no underlying medical conditions.

On Wednesday, Tarrant County health officials reported the death of another swine flu victim ? a man in his 50s.

The Custer County Public Health Department announced Friday they are investigating the cause of death for a child who died after showing flu-like symptoms.

The Custer County Public Health Department announced Friday they are investigating the cause of death for a child who died after showing flu-like symptoms.

Custer County health officials say the victim had flu-like symptoms last week, but they have not yet determined the cause of death.

In the past weeks, Custer County have had children and adults in our community ill with influenza like illness.

The Custer County Health Department recommends taking the following precautions:

If you develop influenza like illness, stay home and treat the symptoms at home. However, if you are at high risk for developing complications from the flu, call your health care provider. Those people at high risk include: children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, people who have cancer, blood disorders, chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders, liver disorders, neurological disorders, or weakened immune system.

Emergency warning signs to look for in children include: fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, not waking up or not interacting, being so irritable the child does not want to be held, flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough, or fever with a rash.

In adults, emergency warning signs include: difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, or severe or persistent vomiting.

Custer County Public Health is making every effort to get everyone protected as quickly as possible for both the seasonal and the H1N1 influenza.

SMCISD: Student dies of influenza complications

San Marcos ? The San Marcos CISD is ?redoubling its efforts to encourage flu prevention? following the death this week of a student at Miller Miller School from complications associated with influenza.

?Our heartfelt prayers and best wishes go to the family and friends of the student,? said Mike Abild, assistant superintendent for business and support services. ?The entire San Marcos CISD family is grieving over his loss.?

The student died Wednesday, and on Thursday, a letter from Superintendent Patty Shafer was sent home with students.

?Let me assure you that the health and well being of our students is my top priority, and we are doing everything possible to address the situation,? she said in the letter.

The child suffered from pre-existing physical health conditions unrelated to influenza, the district said. "We are working closely with health officials to monitor the situation, and at this time, schools will remain open and operating normally," Shafer wrote.

?San Marcos CISD has implemented aggressive sanitation measures at all campuses since the start of school. District custodians are frequently disinfecting common areas such as hallways, lockers, doorknobs, keyboards, hand rails and school buses with recommended germicides,? the letter continued.

Abild said the district encourages parents and student to obtain seasonal flu vaccine and, once it becomes available, the vaccine for the H1N1 ?swine? flu.

?We?re aware the county is currently out of the seasonal vaccine but we understand some organizations like HEB, and most physicians? offices, still have vaccine,? he added.

Currently, authorities expect the H1N1 vaccine to be available sometime in early to mid-November.

In addition to the constant disinfecting, Abild said district personnel encourage ?frequent hand washing and coughing or sneezing into your elbow or disposable tissue.?

?The death of a student has an impact on students and staff,? Shafer wrote. ?School counselors are available to assist both students and staff members following such tragic events. Even if children are not in the same class, grade, or school, they can be affected. Please feel free to talk with one of our campus counselors should you have the need.?

She also encouraged parents to keep their child home from school ?if he or she shows any flu symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, and fatigue, and contact your health care provider immediately.?

Shafer continued, ?Students who are ill should stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.?

The death is the first flu-related in Hays County this season.

Pasadena Independent School District spokeswoman Candace Ahlfinger said the district got confirmation of the diagnosis Friday morning, though the student died on Wednesday. She said the county health department indicated there was an underlying medical condition, but did not specify what it was.

She said the student had not attended classes since Sept. 28, so it was unlikely that any other students had been exposed by contact with him at school.

The district has provided information about the death both through a message posted on its Web site and through an automated telephone notice to parents scheduled for Friday night.

Chaves County girl dies from swine flu

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Chaves County teenager with underlying health conditions has died from complications caused by the swine flu.

The state Department of Health says the death of the 15-year-old girl Saturday brings the statewide number of swine flu-related deaths to 13 this year.

The Health Department did not indicate what chronic condition the girl had.

Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil says the girl's death is a reminder that people with chronic health problems should take every precaution to protect themselves.

6 of the 13 people who died had some type of chronic health condition that put them at a higher risk for developing serious complications from swine flu, also known as H1N1.

Missoula Infant Dies After Probable Swine Flu Diagnosis-NOT Diagnosis is Meningitis

A Missoula infant dies after a battle with H1N1 influenza and other infections. According to the family spokesperson, Conner Hainer-Zavarelli passed away on October 18th at 1:30 PM at a Seattle Hospital. An autopsy will be performed. We're told that, most likely, the H1N1 influenza will be a secondary cause of death. Doctors tell the family that Conner's body was working overtime to fight the Swine flu when another infection set in. We're told that infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, or in other words, bacterial meningitis. That's when Conner's infection worsened to the point where he was life flighted to Seattle. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more information.

A Missoula baby is fighting for his life in a Seattle hospital after being diagnosed with H1N1 influenza. The seven month old is now on life support. Conner Hainer-Zavarelli started showing flu-like symptoms last Tuesday and on Thursday, his aunt, Tiffany, took him to Community Medical Center. Doctors confirmed that he had the Swine flu. By Friday morning, Conner was vomiting blood and bile and had stopped breathing. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to resuscitate him three times before he was lifeflighted to Seattle. Doctors say that while he was fighting the flu, another infection set in. His aunt says before the flu, Conner was a completely healthy baby. Community Medical Center officials are stressing that a 7-month old Missoula baby did not die of the H1N1 flu, contrary to some media reports.

The infant died of complications from Type-A influenza. Conner Hiner-Zaverelli was taken to Community Medical Center last week suffering from flu symptoms.

Personnel then flew the baby to Seattle in critical condition on Friday night when doctors found that Conner developed a secondary infection of bacteria meningitis, which ultimately took his life.

Community Medical Center spokesperson Mary Windecker says tests came back negative for H1N1.

To clarify a story appearing in the Missoulian regarding the baby's death, KPAX never reported on air, or online, that the child was diagnosed with H1N1.

In fact, we chose not to report the initial story as early as Friday simply because there was not enough information about his illness.

Bryan County child dies of 'influenza related illness'

A Coastal Health District spokeperson confirmed Monday that a 4-year-old girl from Bryan County died of an "influenza-related" illness Sunday in a Savannah Hospital.

No other information was released, but various media reports say the girl is preschool student at Savannah Christian Preparatory School, and according to the SCPS website at www.savcps.com the school's daycare has closed for two days after a 4-year-old girl in the school's "daycare/preschool" got sick early Saturday morning and died Sunday afternoon at Memorial Health Medical Center.

MMHC confirmed a child died there Sunday from flu like symptoms.

Here's what the rest of release said:

"Doctors have not, as yet, firmly determined the cause. Parents acknowledged that the nausea was not accompanied by fever (seeming to rule out the primary characteristic of the H1N1 virus). Her sister, a student in the SCPS Lower School, had a fever, tested positive for the flu, and is being treated. Test results will not be back for two days, so it is not known at this time if she has Influenza A or the H1N1 virus. She will be out of school until it is safe for her to return."

"As a precaution for all children, the Daycare will be closed Monday and Tuesday while a deep cleaning is being done," the website said. "Although not required to close by the state licensing board, the school made the decision to to clean and disinfect every nook and cranny, including washing the walls, in order to take extraordinary precautionary steps. If you have a child in the Daycare, we appreciate your making alternate plans for child care during these two days while our Faculty and Staff also cope with this loss."

"We encourage your prayers for this family while they cope with this unthinkable tragedy, and they appreciate your respect for their privacy during this time. Our hearts go out to them. We will let you know when funeral arrangements are made.

UPDATE: Richmond Hill girl dies after flu-like symptoms

A 4-year-old Richmond Hill girl died Sunday after exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

Elaina "Lainey” Redick became nauseated Saturday morning and was taken to Memorial University Medical Center, where she died Sunday afternoon.

Doctors would confirm only that the child died of flu-like symptoms.

Savannah Christian Daycare, where the child was a student, has closed for two days as a precaution. The daycare will reopen Wednesday after a thorough cleaning and disinfecting has been completed.

The elementary, middle and high schools remain open.

DeKalb County teen dies from flu complications

DeKALB ? A DeKalb County teenager has died of complications related to H1N1 flu, the county Health Department said Monday in a written statement.

The statement said health officials are investigating whether the student had underlying medical conditions that could have contributed to death. The statement added that the student had not yet been to school this year because of illness.

This is the first death of a DeKalb County resident with 2009 H1N1 influenza.

"As has been noted in Illinois and around the country, fatalities due to influenza continue to occur, especially but not exclusively when there are underlying medical conditions that increase the risk of severe illness," the statement said.

People are encouraged to take common-sense steps to prevent flu: Wash hands frequently, cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and stay home if you are sick.

People who have more severe symptoms ? difficulty breathing, dehydration, confusion, pain or pressure in chest or abdomen ? should seek medical attention immediately.

Health Dept: H1N1 victim had no other health conditions

ShareDeKALB ? A 16-year-old from Sandwich who died this week of H1N1 influenza was otherwise healthy, the DeKalb County Health Department reported Friday.

"Based on the information available to us, the student had no known underlying health conditions prior to becoming ill," county Public Health Administrator Karen Grush said in a written statement.

Both the health department and the Sandwich school district reported earlier this week that the student, whose name and gender have not been confirmed, had not been to school this academic year because of illness.

"This is a difficult reminder that influenza can be a serious infection," Grush said in the statement. "For most people, the flu continues to be a relatively mild illness; however, it is possible for individuals to become seriously ill."
