Coast Guard to Cruise Ships: Prepare to Care for Sick at Sea

Jonathan Levin, Bloomberg News
(Bloomberg) -- Cruise ships should be ready to care for passengers and crew with Covid-19 and other flulike symptoms at sea, the U.S. Coast Guard has advised, saying medical evacuations are contributing to strained health-care resources in the Southeast.

Foreign-flagged vessels with more than 50 people on board should plan to treat passengers for an “indefinite period of time,” according to a March 29 memo from the Coast Guard Seventh District Area of Responsibility, which includes Georgia, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and Florida, home to the world’s busiest cruise port in Miami.

The Coast Guard isn’t saying it will refuse evacuations or not let ships dock. The advisory applies to cruise ships flying foreign flags -- virtually the entire industry. Three Carnival Corp. vessels, including two with sick passengers, are steaming toward Fort Lauderdale and are due to arrive in days.

“This is necessary as shore-side medical facilities may reach full capacity and lose the ability to accept and effectively treat critically-ill patients,” said the memo, which was signed by Rear Admiral E.C. Jones, commander of the Seventh District.

  • MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) - Nearly 60 percent of 217 people - many from Australia, Europe and the United States - on board a cruise ship off the coast of Uruguay have tested positive for the new coronavirus, the ship's operator said Tuesday.
"There are currently no fevers on board and all are asymptomatic," said Aurora Expeditions, the Australian operator of the Greg Mortimer ship that is working to disembark the crew and passengers and arrange flights to their home countries.

The Greg Mortimer departed March 15 on a voyage to Antarctica and South Georgia that was titled "In Shackleton's Footsteps," a reference to the polar explorer who led British expeditions to the region and died there in 1922.

Of 217 people tested on the vessel, 128 were positive for the virus that causes the COVID-2019 disease and 89 tested negative, Aurora Expeditions said. Another six people from the ship are onshore in "stable"...;)https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap...ronavirus.html

APRIL 7 2020 - 5:44PMCruise ships ordered out of Qld waters
  • Sonia Kohlbacher
There'll be more COVID-19 testing in Qld, with 32 of the state's cases having an unknown source.
All cruise ships anchored in Queensland waters will leave by Wednesday as the state continues to crack down on movements to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Nine cruise ships had been off the coast and the four that now remain have been ordered to leave Queensland waters by one minute before midnight on Wednesday.

The total number of diagnoses in Queensland has reached 934 with an additional 13 cases overnight.

Of the current cases, 42 people had been hospitalised and 11 are in intensive care on ventilation.

Health Minister Steven Miles says four of Queensland's five fatalities from the coronavirus were from people who had been on cruise ships.

Passengers account for 119 cases of the virus in Queensland and a further six people have caught the virus from them.

"We need to stop these cruise ships coming into Queensland and bringing the virus with them," Mr Miles said.

Among Queensland's 13 new cases was an infectious diseases nurse from the Princess Alexandra Hospital who is now isolating.

The nurse was working with COVID-19 patients when she reported feeling unwell.

Queensland Health stated she had followed all procedures including staying home as soon as symptoms emerged.

Six staff members who came in contact with the nurse will also self-isolate for 14 days.

60% OF PASSENGERS INFECTED ON ANTARCTIC CRUISE SHIP

TREVOR KUCHERAN
APRIL 8, 2020
Australian and New Zealand passengers will be evacuated from a stricken Antarctic cruise ship Thursday, after almost 60% of those on board tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Greg Mortimer, a cruise liner operated by Australia's Aurora Expeditions, departed March 15 on a voyage to Antarctica and South Georgia. Since the beginning of April, however, the ship has been stuck off the coast of Uruguay, after authorities refused to allow passengers to disembark due to the risk of coronavirus.

Of the 217 people on board, 128 passengers and crew have now tested positive for the virus.

Six passengers requiring specialized care have been transferred to medical facilities in Montevideo — a video posted online by the Uruguayan navy showed them being transferred from ship to ship wearing full protective gear. Passengers from Europe and America who have tested positive for coronavirus, however, will have to remain on board until they have a negative test result, after which they may be able to depart via Brazil, Aurora said.

All passengers will be retested every two or three days, according to the company's website...;) https://www.traveloffpath.com/60-of-...c-cruise-ship/

NSW Police raid Ruby Princess cruise ship, question crew

Detectives have raided the Ruby Princess cruise ship to seize evidence and question crew members about the docking and disembarkation of passengers in Sydney three weeks ago.

The vessel is linked to hundreds of COVID-19 cases and more than a dozen deaths across Australia.
Detectives wearing personal protective equipment boarded the vessel at Port Kembla on Wednesday night to gather evidence about how hundreds of passengers aboard were allowed to leave the ship on March 19.

"Strike Force Bast investigators are conducting inquiries on-board the Ruby Princess this evening," NSW Police said in a statement.
"The operation is being conducted under the strictest health and workplace safety guidelines."

In coming days police will interview other high-priority witnesses about the scandal, while the vessel is expected to remain at Port Kembla for 10 days with 1040 crew members undergoing medical assessments.
