Cruise Ship Held Off SF for Coronavirus Testing

By Olga R. Rodriguez • Published 5 hours ago • Updated 27 mins ago

A cruise ship that was expected to dock in San Francisco on Thursday will be kept offshore until its thousands of passengers can be tested for the coronavirus, after a previous passenger died from the illness.

Several passengers aboard the Grand Princess had symptoms that could be coronavirus, flu or the common cold, health officials said.

The state planned to fly COVID-19 testing kits out to the ship, which won’t be allowed to dock until the test results are completed, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday....:tiphat:https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/n...sting/2323468/

Cruise Ship Issues Health Advisory to Passengers

DONALD WOOD MARCH 05, 2020Princess Cruises issued a “Health Advisory Letter” to passengers currently sailing or who recently sailed on the Grand Princess ship as health officials are investigating coronavirus cases from a previous voyage.

According to the cruise line’s official website, Princess’ chief medical officer Dr. Grant Tarling said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was investigating a cluster of coronavirus cases in Northern California connected to a previous Grand Princess sailing from San Francisco between February 11-21.

Passengers currently sailing on the Grand Princess are being asked to remain in their staterooms and anyone who believes they may be experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus should contact health officials onboard.

Travelers who sailed on the previous voyage should also stay in their homes until they’re contacted by medical staff from the CDC...

[h=1]COVID-19 Fear: Semarang Rejects Entry of Viking Sun Passengers[/h] [h=4]Dewi Elvia Muthiariny[/h] [h=4]Mahinda Arkyasa[/h]
5 March 2020 18:21 WIB
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Semarang regional government refused to allow passengers of the Viking Sun to disembark in Tanjung Emas Port. The same regulation had been taken by Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini since two passengers of the cruise ship suspected of having contracted COVID-19.
The Norwegian-flagged ship planned to let off passengers in Semarang City. Yet, Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi said the ship had visited countries affected by the novel coronavirus.

"So for the safety of Semarang residents, we decide to reject Viking Sun to dock in Semarang," said Hendrar on Thursday, March 5, 2020.

However, he added that the ship was allowed to load logistics in the port....:tiphat:https://en.tempo.co/read/1315986/covid-19-fear-semarang-rejects-entry-of-viking-sun-passengers

Grand Princess cruise ship reports 'fewer than 100' people identified for coronavirus testing

Princess Cruises confirmed on Thursday morning that “fewer than 100 guests and crew” of the Grand Princess have been identified for COVID-19 testing after some began experiencing “influenza-like illness symptoms.”

The Grand Princess, which was returning to San Francisco from a voyage to Hawaii, is currently being held offshore following reports of the ship’s connection to a cluster of coronavirus outbreaks in California. On Wednesday, public health authorities in Placer County reported the state's first death from COVID-19, in a patient believed to have been exposed during the previous voyage of the Grand Princess....
The company explained that the tests — which were obtained by the ship’s medical staff via helicopter — are being brought to a lab in Richmond, Calif. Under guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all affected guests are being asked to “remain in their staterooms,” Princess Cruises confirmed.....:tiphat:https://www.foxnews.com/health/grand...ting-fewer-100

The ship left Piraeus with clean Health Certificate, there are no cases of any infection on board, and all people on board will undergo health screening on arrival to Corfu.
As of 0700 UTC Mar 5, the ship was in Ionian sea steaming towards Corfu, ETA 0900 UTC Mar 5.

[h=1]Coronavirus concerns: Testing underway for passengers on cruise ship off California coast[/h] A ship carrying about 2,500 passengers remain held off of the coast of California over coronavirus concerns.By Amy Hollyfield

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Officials in the Bay Area are preparing for a cruise ship with thousands of people who may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus.

The cruise ship remains off the coast of California. It traveled from San Francisco to Hawaii and was supposed to stop in Mexico, but that leg of the trip was called off.

While there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 currently on board, the CDC says there are fewer than 100 guests and crew who have been identified for testing. Passengers and crew who experienced influenza-like symptoms or respiratory illness will be tested. The testing kits have been flown out to the ship and then the batches will be taken to a lab in Richmond.

ABC7 News has made contact with a woman who is on board the ship.

Passengers on a cruise ship that is being held off the coast of California are giving an update testing on coronavirus testing.

"A helicopter operation is about to take place, during this operation the open deck will be closed to persons not involved in the operation," announced an official. "Flash photography is strictly prohibited throughout the operation."
During the announcement the official also alerts everyone that some passengers will be evacuated from their cabins during the operation....:tiphat:https://abc7news.com/health/cruise-ship-passengers-tested-for-covid-19-off-calif-coast/5987541/

She resides in the Calgary Zone and is currently in self-quarantine at home. Hinshaw added the patient has already taken precautions. "This person returned to Alberta on Feb. 21 and went into self-quarantine on Feb. 28."

[h=1]Coronavirus: Grand Princess cruise ship may arrive in San Francisco today
By Amy Hollyfield[/h] Updated 22 minutes ago
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- All eyes are on the Grand Princess cruise ship that remains off the coast of California this morning. The ship could come to dock in San Francisco sometime today.

The people on board are awaiting test results from a lab in Richmond. Passengers have been told not to leave their rooms until further notice.

While there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 currently on board, the CDC says there were fewer than 100 guests tested who experienced influenza-like symptoms or respiratory illness.

The city of San Francisco says it's working closely with the Coast Guard, CDC and the state to prepare for a possible increase in coronavirus patients. Tents have been placed outside of UCSF hospital. They set these up to give them extra space for triage if there is a surge of patients.

So does that mean passengers who test positive will come here? City leaders and health officials say they just don't have the answers yet.

"So ultimately, we don't have an answer for exactly where the ship will be docked whether there are people who are diagnosed or not. We don't have that information at this time. Once we know, then a decision will be made and soon as we know what the decision is, then we will provide that information to the public," said San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

Officials are hoping test results will be available this morning....:tiphat:https://abc7news.com/health/coronavirus-sf-preparing-for-possible-arrival-of-cruise-ship/5990183/

Published date: 6 March 2020 12:11 UTC Egypt announced on Friday that 12 new cases of the novel coronavirus were detected on a cruise ship in the southern tourist city of Luxor.
The 12 people who have tested positive for the virus are Egyptians working on the cruise from Aswan to Luxor, according to a joint statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation.

They have not displayed any visible symptoms of the virus, also known as COVID-19, the statement said.

The source of the infections is likely to be a Taiwanese-American tourist recently diagnosed upon her return from Egypt to the United States, the spokesperson of the health ministry Khaled Megahed said.

....One of the stranded passengers on the Grand Princess Cruise Ship is speaking out about her experience.

Debbi Loftus says the ship's captain is coming on every two or three hours to keep passengers updated as to what's going on, including the latest on tests results.

"We should know about 9:00 this morning Pacific Time," said Loftus during a Friday interview with Good Morning America.

Passengers aboard the cruise ship off the California coast have been instructed to stay in their cabins as they await test results that could show whether the novel coronavirus is spreading among the 3,500 people aboard.

A previous passenger died from the illness. Authorities say several passengers aboard the Grand Princess are showing symptoms that could be COVID-19, a cold or flu.

Here's her full interview with ABC's Cecilia Vega on GMA:

CV: Joining us now is Debbi Loftus on that cruise ship. Debbi, thanks for joining us. I know you're traveling with your parents in their 80s in a room right there next to you. How did you all find out what was going on on the ship?

DL: Well, about two days ago we had a piece of paper slid underneath our door telling us that the CDC determined that there's some people on the boat that were symptomatic and that we were having to head back to San Francisco and miss our stop in Mexico.

CV: So we can see you in your room there now. It's our understanding you're now confined to that room but passengers were allowed to mingle even after it had been discovered there were previous passengers who tested positive. Is that concerning to you?

DL: It wasn't concerning because we all figured we'd been together and mingling for the last 13 days so if we were exposed to it,

Denpasar, Bali / Sat, March 7, 2020 / 06:06 am

The Bali administration has decided to abort a plan to welcome the MV Viking Sun cruise ship and its passengers to the resort island on Sunday, as authorities prioritize public health amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The 800 tourists from the United States and Australia aboard the cruise ship, which was initially scheduled to dock at Bali’s Benoa Port on Sunday, will therefore not be able to set foot on the island.

Bali Governor I Wayan Koster announced the decision following a meeting with relevant authorities in the provincial capital of Denpasar on Friday.

[h=1]Cruise ship in quarantine on Egypt's Nile River after 45 people test positive for coronavirus[/h]
32 MIN AGO • SOURCE: ASSOCIATED PRESS
A cruise ship on Egypt's Nile River with more than 150 tourists and local crew was in quarantine today in the southern city of Luxor, and 45 people on board tested positive for the new coronavirus, authorities said.
A Taiwanese-American tourist who had previously been on the same ship tested positive when she returned to Taiwan. The World Health Organization informed Egyptian authorities, who then tested everyone on the ship.

Health authorities first found that a dozen of the ship's Egyptian crew members had contracted the fast-spreading virus, and said they did not show symptoms, according to a joint statement from Egypt's Health Ministry and the WHO yesterday.

The statement said the 12 would be transferred to isolation in a hospital on Egypt's north coast. The passengers — who include Americans, French and other nationalities — and the crew remained quarantined on the ship awaiting further test results.

At a news conference in Cairo, Health Minister Hala Zayed said 33 others tested positive for the virus. Of the total 45 infected passengers and crew, 19 are foreigners, officials said.
