The Biden administration has distributed 1,200 monkeypox vaccine doses for people who have had high-risk exposures to the virus, part of a nationwide public health response to stamp out the disease before it causes a major outbreak.

U.S. health officials, worried the virus is spreading faster than previously thought, have said the global outbreak of monkeypox is the largest ever. The World Health Organization said Wednesday that there are now more than 550 cases across 30 countries. In the U.S., at least 20 confirmed or suspected cases have been reported in 11 states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Utah and Washington state, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“A monkeypox outbreak of this scale and scope across the world, it has not been seen before,” Dr. Raj Panjabi, who leads the White House pandemic preparedness office, told reporters on a call last week. ...

Do we know if they are distributing the more dangerous smallpox vaccine that is unapproved by the FDA for monkeypox or the newer - thought to be safer - Jynneos vaccine that is approved?
CDC says (lying?) that we only have 1,000 approved vaccines so short 200. Bavarian Nordic says we have more than a million approved vaccines? Are they holding those back and for whom?

Last week, CDC official Dr. Jennifer McQuiston said the U.S. has 1,000 doses of Jynneos available. However, the Danish biotech company that makes the shots, Bavarian Nordic, said the U.S. actually has a supply of more than 1 million Jynneos frozen doses stored in the U.S. and Denmark under an order placed in April 2020. The shots have a shelf life of three years.
 
Assuming it has to be Jynneos. The older smallpox vaccine has a fatality rate of about one in one million. If you're vaccinating against a 30% CFR smallpox virus, that's a price you're willing to pay. Unless the CFR of this virus increases, I can't imagine they'd risk using the ACAM vaccine against it. The reason ACAM was never deployed to prevent a smallpox terrorist attack was that the vaccination of the entire population of the US with that vaccine would kill approximately 300 people.

The older ACAM vaccine contains live vaccinia virus, which is also an orthopoxvirus and would greatly complicate the testing of these cases for monkeypox.

Apparently due to high number of immunocompromised people, particularly homosexual men who are most at risk for monkey pox, using the small pox vaccine (which provides some, but not full, immunity), may cause the virus to escape and rapidly evolve. His mouse studies developed a super strain that not only killed all the test subjects, but it could not be stopped either through additional vaccination or therapeutics.

Interesting that this is was a table top exercise (war gamed), and sponsored by the NTI in Munich last year. In their hypothetical scenario, the monkey pox outbreak was scheduled for May 15, 2022.

June is Pride Month and potential super spreader events are taking place all over the western world.

Regarding smallpox vaccine use for this particular (mild) outbreak virus - I think it would be a big mistake for any sort of routine use.
