Why foreign CEOs should care about Ukraine
March 3, 2014: 1:04 PM ET
...
That's why Sam Allen and Ray Lane, the current and former CEOs of Deere (DE), and Doug Oberhelman, CEO of Caterpillar (CAT), have all told me how critical the country is to their strategies. It's also why those companies plus Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Cargill, DuPont (DD), Mondelez (MDLZ), Monsanto (MON), and other U.S. agribusiness companies have operations there.
Perhaps most important, it's why China last year negotiated an extraordinary 50-year deal to rent 5% of Ukraine -- 7.4 million acres, about the size of Massachusetts or Belgium. China consumes some 20% of the world's food, a share that is increasing fast, but it has only 9% of the world's arable land, a share that is declining as urbanization takes over more farmland. The country needs a piece of the breadbasket. China's official government news agency has published articles warning of threats to the country's "grain security."

....
Though he is nowhere near as wealthy as the country's top oligarchs, Firtash's close links to Russia, and possibly to the Kremlin via the energy sector, make him one of the most influential figures in Ukraine.
Firtash is not named on an initial European Union list of Ukrainians suspected of misusing state funds and violating human rights and whose assets are to be frozen as a result of the crisis over the Russian incursion into Ukraine's Crimea.
He is one of several Ukrainian oligarchs who have called for Ukraine's territorial integrity to be maintained in the face of Russia's military incursion into Crimea..

Ukraine's new prosecutor-general Oleh Makhnitsky told Reuters: "We are not the initiators of this action"...
Firtash is founder and chairman of Group DF, whose website describes it as a diversified international group of companies operating across Europe and Asia in fields including fertilizer, titanium, gas distribution and banking. His plants and companies are present in Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Cyprus, Tajikistan, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria and Estonia.

Ukraine caught in clash between powers as Crimea joins Russia

Even the vultures from the global banking system are worried. ?We are seeing East against West, which makes it more difficult for the IMF,? said Swiss banker Zsolt Papp. ?Ukraine is just the pawn here.?
Ordinary Ukrainian people gain nothing from Russian intervention or from further expansion of US and European Union influence.
Tackling gas corruption means potatoes for Ukraine?s poor

Galina Pavlik barely scrapes by on her monthly pension of $290. Like many Ukrainians, the 73 year-old Kiev resident depends on gas to heat her three-room apartment. The bill swallows about a sixth of her income.
The new Ukrainian government will soon need people like Galina to pay even more for power and gas as it wrestles with protracted economic and political crisis. In the wake of a diplomatic showdown between the West and Russia over Crimea?s March 16 vote to secede from the country, Ukraine?s future now depends in large part on its ability to secure $35 billion in U.S. and European Union aid. Cutting energy subsidies, considered economically wasteful and a magnet for corruption, will be key to getting that help, even if it means more pain for households.

The fate of Ukraine?s offshore Black Sea projects coveted by Exxon Mobil Corp. and Eni SpA (ENI) is now unclear. The March 16 referendum in Crimea supported seceding and joining Russia. While the vote was condemned as illegal by the EU and U.S., it?s not clear if the government in Kiev will retain control over oil and gas licenses in the Black Sea.

?We?re dealing with potentially a very rich country,? Dempsey said. ?But the energy infrastructure has been completely neglected.?...

"Here's the thing, when you're dealing with a world leader, you wonder whether or not he's telling the truth," Bush told reporters Monday. "I've never had to worry about that with Vladimir Putin. Sometimes he says things I don't want to hear, but I know he's always telling me the truth."
