The response from the health authority is clear and intended to be reassuring following false information concerning a case of avian flu (H5N1) in an establishment in Martinique.

A woman from the EHPAD was hospitalized at the Martinique Hospital Center. After analysis, it is a case of influenza A (H1N1).

"Following numerous rumors of a case of avian flu within the EHPAD Marcel Hardy du Robert and after contact with the infectious diseases department of the CHUM, neither the CHUM nor the ARS confirm at this time that the patient for avian flu. No other resident of the EHPAD du Robert was treated by the CHUM teams, even for flu."

The establishment, which has around sixty places, is the only one in the town.

As a preventive measure, “ measures to strengthen barrier gestures and hygiene measures were immediately implemented within the EHPAD ”.

Avian flu is an infection that mainly affects bird species. The virus can also infect other species, including humans (H5N1).

By RCI web with Myrtha Paller 04/10/2024 - 1:08 p.m. • Updated 04/10/2024 - 1:16 p.m.

A suspected case of avian flu this morning (Wednesday April 10) at the accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people was invalidated by the services of the Martinique University Hospital and the Regional Health Agency. The precautionary principle was immediately applied.

The subject aroused great concern this morning but there are no cases of avian flu within the Robert nursing home. “Following numerous rumors of a case of avian flu within the EHPAD Marcel Hardy du Robert and after contact with the infectious diseases department of the CHUM, neither the CHUM nor the ARS confirm at this time of treatment of patient for avian flu", reassures the ARS Martinique, this Wednesday morning.

In the morning, a suspicion of avian flu concerned a resident of the EHPAD. Immediately, the management of the establishment applied the precautionary principle, with barrier gestures, wearing a mask and regular hand washing for all staff at the elderly care structure.

A case of human influenza A

No other resident of the EHPAD du Robert was cared for by the CHUM teams, even for flu, indicates the ARS. And to specify that “human infections of influenza A (H5N1) are mandatory to report. No statement has been received at this stage.”

After the analysis results, it is a case of human influenza A. “Consequently, the suspicion of a case of avian flu is invalidated,” maintains the ARS.
