A new type of the H5N1 strain has been confirmed in Nakhon Phanom, where over 300,000 chickens have died or been culled as a result of widespread infections, according to Yong Poovorawan, team leader of virologists monitoring changes in the virus since 2004.



The strain has a genetic character close to that of the virus in southern China, he said, adding that virologists were still unsure how it crossed the border from there into Thailand.

There are four types of the H5N1 virus in the region _ the so-called Thai-Vietnamese type, the Indonesian type, and another two types occurring in China. The Thai-Vietnamese type has plagued Thailand since official confirmation of the first outbreak in early 2004.



The virologist said the impact of the new strain on human health was so far no different from that of the Thai-Vietnamese type. But he warned officials to pay attention if they wanted to develop human vaccines which can tackle both types of the virus strain.

''We now have two types of bird flu strain in the country. The new one may not yet have any significance in terms of its health impact but it certainly has significance for our control measures, which might have to improve to cope with its emergence,'' he said.



Livestock Development Department chief Yukol Limlamthong said the agency would beef up controls on fowl movements between area zones, and he called on poultry raisers to tighten their bio-security measures.



Director of the Epidemiology Bureau Kumnuan Ungchusak said scientists needed to be aware of every bird flu type emerging here, so human vaccines could be developed.

But health officials would not strengthen bird flu control measures among humans as the present regime was already intensive, Dr Kumnuan said. Sick people found to be in close contact with ailing fowls would be listed as suspect cases, he said.

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Animal Health has confirmed the success of a vaccine prototype for fowls. Director Pornchai Chamnanpood said complete vaccine production which could pave the way for commercial use would be accomplished by February next year.
Thailand is now in the fourth outbreak round, which has killed two people, one each in Phichit and Uthai Thani. Since the first round, more than 60 million fowls have been culled and 16 people have died.

The title of the article is misleading. For those of us following H5N1, the discovery of a strain known to China occurring in Thailand is no surprise. Could it really be a surprise to the/some Thai officials? If so, could this result in many false negatives on PCR tests if they are using the wrong reactors (not sure what they are called)???

China's H5N1 Bird Flu Strain Spread to Thailand, Laos (Update1)

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- A variant of the H5N1 bird flu strain found in southern China caused outbreaks in poultry in Thailand and Laos last month, suggesting the virus was re-introduced through trade, a United Nations agency said.

Avian flu killed two people in Thailand during the past three weeks in provinces where the virus sickened fowl in the country's first outbreak this year. H5N1 was also found in birds on farms near the Laotian capital, Vientiane. New infections create chances for the virus to mutate into a pandemic form.

The outbreaks in Thailand's Nakhon Phanom province and across the border in Laos were caused by a variant not detected previously in either country, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Bangkok said in an e-mailed statement today.

"The virus is similar to recent isolates from southern China, suggesting that the virus spread from China to Thailand and Laos,'' the FAO said. "Poultry trade across borders is continuing in Southeast and East Asia despite well-known risks to the governments and people in the region.''

Human H5N1 fatalities have almost tripled this year as the virus spread in wild birds and domestic poultry to at least 38 countries.

The FAO and other UN agencies are leading a campaign to help stem the spread of H5N1, which has infected 238 people, killing 139 of them since 2003, mostly in Asia. It may kill millions should it start spreading easily among people.

Vaccine Development

Scientists are studying genetic sequences of the viruses to spot changes that may indicate H5N1 is becoming more contagious and closer to setting off a pandemic. They are also trying to gauge dominant variants of the virus to speed preparations for vaccines to fight a human outbreak.

"When there are multiple lineages circulating it makes it even more challenging to predict the potential strain likely to be needed for vaccine development,'' Jennifer McKimm-Breschkin, a virologist at the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organization in Melbourne, said in an e-mail.

Genetic analyses of the virus that caused the outbreak last month in the Thai province of Phichit showed that it was the same strain circulating in the area for almost three years, the FAO said. This indicates that H5N1 is endemic in the area, it said.

"The H5N1 virus thus remained alive in central Thailand in a reservoir of birds and poultry, most probably a mix of backyard chicken, ducks and fighting cocks,'' said Laurence Gleeson, regional manager of FAO's avian flu center in Bangkok.

More Vigilance

Recent sharing of information, epidemiological analysis and joint field missions to assess and control outbreaks in poultry have resulted in a better understanding of the resurgence of avian flu in Southeast Asia, the UN agency said.

"Continuing outbreaks in China, recurrence in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, and the steady march of the disease in Indonesia underline the need for heightened vigilance in other Asian countries to prevent and detect any resurgence or introduction of the deadly bird flu virus,'' said He Changchui, FAO's regional representative for Asia and the Pacific. "Timely reporting and sharing information continue to be crucial.''

Governments in the region and FAO are working to arrest avian flu at its source.

They "have so far only received a fraction of the $308.5 million needed,'' FAO said. Funding has so far come from Japan, USAID and the Asian Development Bank.

"We are aware that there is a lot of trade still going on, mainly smuggling, of course, of chicken and poultry products," said Diderik de Vleeschauwer, FAO spokesman in Bangkok. "The movement and trade of animals and poultry products is the main reason for the spreading of disease."
He added that migratory birds are not to blame because they are not on the move in Southeast Asia this time of year. The strain also is unique to southern China and had not previously been found elsewhere, de Vleeschauwer said.
The samples have been sent to an international reference laboratory in Australia for further analysis. FAO also warned countries in the region to step up awareness and surveillance as more outbreaks surface in other countries.

BANGKOK, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Thai medical researchers have announced their discovery of a new strain of avian influenza virus in the latest outbreak in the country's northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom, TNA reported Wednesday.

The result emerged from an epidemiological study to break the genetic code of bird flu virus strains collected from the latest outbreak -- Thailand's fourth -- in the provinces of Phichit and Nakhon Phanom.

Prof. Dr Yong Poovorawan of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine announced the findings Wednesday on behalf of the Networking Committee of Laboratories and Bird Flu Prevention.

Analysis has established that the strain found in Phichit is similar to that found in Thailand and Vietnam in 2004.

However, the bird flu virus found in Nakhon Phanom turned out to be the same strain as that found in southeastern China.

This is the first time that this particular strain of bird flu virus emerged in Thailand.

According to Dr Yong, researchers could not trace its route from China to Thailand.

"We know that the outbreak in Nakhon Phanom was not caused by the strain from the central region of Thailand. In 2004 and 2005, the virus strain found in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia all belongs to the same group. But by 2006, there are two strains found in Thailand," said Dr Yong, adding that the research findings will be helpful for disease control.

There are four strains of bird flu virus found respectively in China's Qing Hai Province, the strain found in Thailand and Vietnam, Indonesia, and finally another in southeastern China.

The bird flu virus detected in Europe, the Middle East and Africa belongs to the Qing Hai-originated strain.

The performance of genetic decode analysis has also established that there is no threat yet of mutation, or human-to-transmission.

Between 2004-2006, the research team has decoded some 200 strains to trace changes.

"We found some changes, but ones which are not significant enough to indicate human-to-human transmission," said Prof. Dr Yong, adding however, that the team is constantly on alert to monitor and handle any critical turn of the situation.

With the new strain found in Nakhon Phanom, it is possible that poultry vaccine being developed may have to be a hybrid of two strains.

Veterinarian Pornchai Chamnanpood, meanwhile, announced that the vaccine trial could be launched in February 2007.

Hong Kong - Recent outbreaks of H5N1 bird flu in Thailand were caused by two strains of the virus, but neither of them showed any significant mutation that would enable them to jump easily to people or spread with ease among humans.

Yong Poovorawan, a professor at Chulalongkorn University's Medical Faculty in Thailand, analysed two H5N1 samples taken from infected chickens in Thailand's central Pichit province and one taken from north-eastern Nakhon Phanom province last month.

The two samples from Pichit closely resembled a H5N1 strain that had circulated in Thailand in 2004 and 2005, his laboratory found.

"The severity of the virus is the same," he told Reuters.

"There was no change in their receptor binding sites and there was no change in their resistance to (anti-viral) Tamiflu," he said, referring to two key traits of H5N1.

Scientists look at these traits when determining if there may may be changes in H5N1 that would enable it to jump more easily to people and spread easily among them.

It is still difficult for humans to catch bird flu because it has "receptor binding sites", which prefer to lock on to receptors in bird hosts, not humans.

Some experts believe it is when the H5N1's receptor binding site adapts to human hosts that it will transmit easily among people, and spark a pandemic that could kill millions.

Poovorawan said the genetic sequence of the H5N1 sample from Nakhon Phanom showed it was most closely related to a strain that has been circulating in China's eastern provinces of Zhejiang (2006) and Anhui (2005), Fujian (2005) in the southeast, and south-western Guangxi (2005).

"There are many ways to spread a virus from one place to another. Poultry, people, migratory birds," he said, but declined to speculate how the strain was introduced into Thailand.

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation said on Thursday the strain in Nakhon Phanom and neighbouring Laos appeared to have come from southern China and it called for stricter measures to prevent further spread of the disease in birds and poultry.

"Poultry trade across borders is continuing in Southeast and East Asia despite well-known risks," the organisation said.

On the Pichit strain, the FAO said it had "remained alive (in the past two-three years) in central Thailand in a reservoir of birds and poultry, most probably a mixture of backyard chickens, ducks and fighting cocks". A 17-year-old youth died in the outbreak.

The virus has spread to Europe, the Middle East and Africa and is known to have killed 139 people, according to the World Health Organisation. Indonesian officials also reported the death of a nine-year-old girl from the disease in West Java this week.

The Ministry of Agriculture denied on Friday a number of foreign reports that the recent outbreak of avian influenza in Thailand was due to a strain of the virus that probably came from southern China.

"This is groundless and irresponsible," sources with the ministry's press office told China Daily on Friday.


According to the current information held by the Chinese authorities, a verdict arrived at by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the bird flu research and test centre of Thailand was arbitrary and based on the fact that the virus found in Thailand and Laos was similar to recent finds in southern China, the ministry's statement said.

The ministry has not found the full text of the test report by the FAO and the Thai centre and knew little about the test procedure, and origin and type of the examples used.

However some media reports quoted the FAO conclusion and correlated the outbreak in Thailand with southern China.

According to statistics provided by China's customs, the country has not exported any poultry products to Thailand or Laos since 2004 when China first reported a H5N1 outbreak in its poultry.

"Nakhon Phanom in Thailand and the Laotian capital of Vientiane, where the virus strain was detected, are both very far from the Chinese border," the ministry's statement said.

In conclusion, the ministry denied the possibility that the virus was transmitted through poultry trade across the borders, as was mentioned in several foreign reports.

The ministry emphasized that as the prevention and control abilities of different Asian countries varied, most reports were inconclusive and could not safely be used to detect new trends.

Also complicating the case is the fact that the virus can be transmitted by wild birds.

"So it is irresponsible to decide that the strain of virus detected in Thailand was from a certain country before having sufficient evidence," the statement said.

The ministry said that as a responsible country, China was ready to co-operate with all countries in to fight against the bird flu epidemic.
