BANGKOK, Oct 7: A Thai woman suspected of having contracted Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus has been hospitalised after returning from her pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, reports Vietnam News Agency (VNA). The 59-year-old woman who lives in Muang district, the southern Thai province of Yala, was admitted on Tuesday with the flu-like symptoms of high fever, cough and breathing difficulties, provincial health authorities said on Wednesday. She returned home on Oct 2. This year, about 10,400 Thais performed their haj and are expected to return to the country by the end of this month. Most of the MERS cases have sourced from Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia. MERS Coronavirus belongs to the family of corona viruses which also includes SARS which haunted Asia in 2003.

[h=1]Haj pilgrim has suspected MERS symptoms[/h] [h=2]A 62-year-old man in Yala's Betong district, who had just returned from the annual Haj in Saudi Arabia on October 4, had symptoms resembling those of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS). Betong Health official Wongwit Akarawarothai said the man's illness could also stem from inhaling smog that currently shrouds the region.[/h] Thai officials were already watching out for MERS among Thais returning from the Haj in this period. They will examine this man for MERS and monitor him for another 14 days.

On Tuesday, a 59-year-old woman in Muang Yala back from the Haj was taken to a disease screening clinic to test for MERS and the result is pending.

Thailand had a confirmed MERS case earlier this year but it was promptly contained and the 75-year-old foreigner recovered and went home. No more infections have been reported since.
