Update: PM hospitalised with flu, not upset stomach



(BangkokPost.com) - Doctors at Bumrungrad Hospital, where Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej was admitted to on Tuesday morning, said the premier has a flu.

Mr Samak is advised to remain in hospital for a few more days. No visitors are allowed.

Earlier reports said Mr Samak had food poisoning after having fermented fish at an outdoor market in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on Monday.

He was taken to the hospital in the morning and canceled all of his work schedule on Tuesday.

He assigned Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to chair the weekly cabinet meeting while he was absent.

He was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning, and all work schedules were cancelled for the rest of the day.


The cabinet held its weekly meeting without him. Deputy Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat chaired the meeting. Mr Somchai is acting premier while Mr Samak is in hospital.

Previous news reports indicated that he was hospitalized for food poisoning. The update is to correct the record - flu, not poisoning.

I'm not contesting the need of the update. Bracket texts must be read as 'This is an update but what's the news?'

The fact that a minister or - in this case - a prime minister need to be hospitalized isn't really a news. In most cases, a disease hits a politician when background events 'need' he is absent.

For the past, however, iconic tv images from Japan resulted with US president Bush sr caught stomach bug during a state visit and collapsed during a banquet.
