Thai floods worsen as toll reaches 12

October 20, 2010 -

The worst flooding to hit parts of Thailand in decades has inundated about a quarter of the country, officials said on Wednesday, as the death toll from fast rising waters climbed to 12.

Rescue teams helped evacuate stranded people by boat as homes and huge swathes of farmland have been deluged, while in Bangkok people living on the banks of the Chao Phraya River were braced for overflowing waters.

"The flooding in many provinces remains critical and the water has spread widely, leaving about one fourth of Thailand flooded," said interior minister Chavarat Charnvirakul.

Tuesday, 26 October 2010 15:23

BANGKOK - Floodwaters that have swamped central Thailand since last week have claimed 56 lives and spread flood-related diseases to at least 170,000 people, health officials said Tuesday.

Health Minister Jurin Raksannawisit said 49 of the 56 dead had drowned and the remaining seven had died from flood-related accidents, such as electrocution.

With 25 of Thailand's 77 provinces inundated, the Public Health Ministry has stepped up monitoring for the spread of flood-related diseases, such as leptospirosis, dengue, malaria, influenza, kidney ailments and stress, Jurin said.

Thailand's flood crisis hits south, clears hospital

BANGKOK—Thai hospital staff said they were forced to evacuate patients on Monday as the kingdom's flooding crisis, which has killed more than 100 people in three weeks, spread to the south.

Na Thawi district hospital in Songkhla province was forced to close and transfer 37 patients to another medical center after the area was hit by early morning flash floods, director Suwat Viriyapongsukit said.

"Floods have reached the building at around one meter high and we cannot operate," he told AFP.

Authorities say the nationwide floods, which began on October 10, have affected about five million people and left 101 dead, although until now they were mostly in central, northern and eastern parts of the country.
