Thailand reports 21 more swine flu deaths over the past week

BANGKOK, Thailand ? Thailand announced Wednesday it has recorded 21 more swine flu-related deaths over the past week, bringing the total number of fatalities to 65.

"The fatal cases have involved those who have prior medical conditions, those with weak immune system and some who sought treatment late," said the ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary Paijit Warachit. The number of people infected with swine flu jumped to 8,877 from 6,776, he said.

The latest report came amid disagreement among health officials over the most efficient way to distribute the anti-viral medicine Tamiflu.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai earlier this week proposed a plan to distribute Tamiflu through medical clinics, in addition to hospitals, in a bid to solve the problem of delayed treatment.

But virologists at the ministry expressed concerns, saying that unmonitored distribution of the anti-viral could result in drug resistance.

"We do not know for a fact that delayed treatment is the main cause of deaths," said the ministry's virologist Prasert Thongcharoen. "We need to study the data more carefully to see the costs and benefits of wider distribution, which could lead to a problem of drug resistance in the future."

Preventive use of Tamiflu has occasionally led resistant viruses to crop up, including those of seasonal flu. Denmark, Hong Kong, Canada and Japan have reported one case each of Tamiflu-resistant swine flu.

Thailand has 3.39 million tablets of Tamiflu in its stock, and the Government Pharmaceutical Organization is producing another 10 million tablets, Paichit said.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva last week said the spread of swine flu will likely continue through at least 2010 and that the number of unreported cases could be in the tens of thousands.

The World Health Organization said Monday the worldwide death toll has reached 816 since the start of the outbreak. It has tallied more than 130,000 infections around the world.

BANGKOK, Aug 5 (TNA) ? The public health ministry confirmed 16 new fatalities from the Influenza type A (H1N1), raising the country?s total deaths to 81.

Dr Paichit Varachit, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, released the public health ministry?s weekly report on the Influenza type A (H1N1) outbreak that it registered 16 deaths in the seven days from July 26 to August 2. Of the total 16 cases, nine persons are male and seven are female.

Seventy-five per cent of the deceased had congenital diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and asthma.

The number of fatalities dropped by five from last week as the public understand more about the illness and have better assess to the anti-viral drug distributed to clinics, he said. (TNA)

The Public Health Ministry on Tuesday reported 16 more deaths from the influenza A(H1N1)virus last week, bringing the total death toll from the flu to 97.

The ministry expected the fatality rate to drop in the next three to four weeks.

Health deputy permanent secretary Dr Paijit Warachit said the spread of the virus in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces had slowed. In other provinces, the spread of the virus among people aged 6 to 20 years had slowed down.

This implied that the screening of sick students at schools was working.

However, infections among farmers and company employees were still rising, so the ministry had to work harder in controlling the spread of the virus in communities.

Dr Paijit said the number of days it took patients to recover after being treated with oseltamivir anti-viral medication had also fallen -- from 7 days to 5 to 6 days.

The Ministry of Public Health confirmed on Wednesday that 14 more people had died from the A(H1N1) swine flu virus last week, bringing the country?s flu death toll from April 26 to Aug 15 to 111.

Of the total new flu victims, seven were male and seven female, according to Phaichit Varachit, the ministry's permanent secretary.

Of the new victims, 12 of them had underlying health problems ranging from obesity and heart disease to diabetes, Mr Phaichit said.

"The situation is stable in Bangkok and the surround provinces but the virus is on the rise upcountry and we expect the outbreak to continue for the next two months until the cool season begins," a government statement said.

The ministry last week reported an accumulated flu death toll of 97.

Doctor: Thai pregnant woman dies of A/H1N1

A Thai pregnant woman died on early Thursday morning due to the A/H1N1 influenza, while her fetus is safe, a senior doctor said.

The woman, 26, had been admitted at Maharaj Hospital in the city of a northeastern province of Na-korn-raj-sri-ma for about three weeks, Doctor Weerasak Kiat-pa-doong-gul, deputy director of the hospital said, Thai language news agency Thai Rath Online reported.

She died of lung infection, respiratory system's failure and renal failure as she is confirmed of having been infected with the new virus, the doctor said.

However, a medical team successfully rescued her fetus through a caesarean section, doctor Weerasak said.

It is a baby girl, with a 1,400-gram weight, as now she is in an incubator and she is free from the A/H1N1 influenza disease, the doctor said.

On Wednesday, Thailand's Public Health Ministry on announced 14 more deaths due to the A/H1N1 influenza infection, bringing the country's death toll to 111.

Thailand had its first two confirmed patients on May 12.

A health ministry official has reported 8 more swine flu-related deaths in Thailand, bringing the total to 119.

Deputy Permanent Secretary Paijit Warachit said Wednesday that six of the latest victims - three men and three women - suffered from other chronic diseases, includig obesity, heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes.

Paijit says the number of cases in Bangkok has dropped while it has risen in rural areas. He said there is more public awareness and that people are taking preventative measures like wearing masks and washing their hands.

He says they are finding more cases in "factory workers and farmers outside of the city," and that most are between the ages of 31 and 45.

Thailand's (A)H1N1 deaths rise to 130

BANGKOK, Aug 31 (TNA) - A public health expert on Monday confirmed 11 new Influenza Type A (H1N1) fatalities this week, raising the country?s official total death toll to 130.

Dr. Prasert Thongcharoen, president of the Virology Association (Thailand,) said that according to the weekly report on the swine flu outbreak in Thailand, 11 new deaths were confirmed in the past week as the country?s total A (H1N1) cases rose to 16,876.

The outbreak intensified in the provinces and it was expected that there would be totally 3 million patients, both showing symptoms and not showing symptoms, nationwide.

Dr. Prasert, who also heads the ministry's Medical and Public Health Technical and Strategy Advisory panel on A(H1N1) influenza said it is expected that the outbreak will be eased after 30 per cent of total population or 22 million persons infected with the virus.

He added that among the patients, 40 per cent were infected with virus type A(H1N1) but the seasonal flu patients were also increasing.

He warned that the strict measures should be applied to prevent the mixture between the two strain of virus.

The Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday that 12 more people had died of the A (H1N1) flu virus last week, bringing the country?s swine flu toll to 142 since May 2009.

Of the new flu victims, three were male and nine female, seven were in the Northeast, three in the South and one each in the North and the East, said Phaijit Varachit, permanent secretary of the ministry.

Dr Phaijit said there were large numbers of swine flu patients in Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, Khon Kaen, Roi-Et, Mukdahan, Chiang Mai, Kamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Chachoengsao, Rayong, Chon Buri, Lopburi, Saraburi, Samut Sakorn, Samut Songkram, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla and Phuket.

?Two-thirds of the new swine flu victims, six male and five female, had chronic illnesses,? deputy health permanenet secretary Phaijit Varachit said.

Dr Phaijit said his ministry had directed all public health centres to keep a close watch on the situation. If they come across patients with swine flu-like symptoms, they must assume the patients have been infected with the deadly virus and immediately send them to a hospital.

?Doctors can immediately give the patients an anti-viral drug without having to wait for lab test results. This measure is aimed at reducing the fatality rate,? Dr Phaijit said.
