Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

You can tell they're scared.

They went from "nothing's wrong" to "we have 1 confirmed fatality, 112 officially suspected cases in 14 provinces (excluding newspaper reports), swelling hospitals, and at least 2/3 of the country infected as well as our neighbors" in 100 hours flat.

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

"As a preventive measure, Phichit and its adjoining provinces of Phitsanulok, Sukhothai and Uttaradit have been ordered to cull all poultry, beef up surveillance and register all fighting cocks."

Agree they sound frightened.......

Commonground's reference to the four provinces being culled make up the "cat's head" in the attached image. It's looking west...

Copying Nancy's post, I highlighted the number of times they used the word "suspected". Why are they still so suspicious, if there was one death? And they keep reassuring everyone it's most likely the normal flu.

112 admitted for bird flu tests in North
Saturday, July 29, 2006

PHICHIT - Thai public health authorities have admitted that over one hundred patients from 14 provinces suspected of having contracted avian influenza and are being monitored and tested for bird flu, but no new cases have been reported following a flurry of new reports during the past week.

No new cases of avian influenza have been confirmed, a senior Public Health Ministry official said Saturday.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Prat Boonyawongvirot said a total of 112 patients from 14 provinces, including two from Bangkok, had been admitted for further laboratory tests after earlier tests showed that most suffered from human influenza, but not avian influenza.

Dr. Prat said health officers were also closely monitoring about three dozen medical personnel and three other persons who looked after a 17-year-old youth who died of confirmed avian influenza in the northern province of Phichit last Monday.

Although no further cases of bird flu have been confirmed, public health authorities met Saturday in both Phichit and the neighbouring Phitsanulok Province to assess the situation and work out stricter bird flu control measures. So far no H5N1 virus has been found.

Nonetheless, physicians, nurses and public health officials were told to be more alert for people suspected to have contracted the disease.

Hospitals across Thailand had admitted more patients suspected of contracting avian influenza, Public Health Minister Phinij Jarusombat indicated Friday, most with cough and standard influenza symptoms.

He said he would establish a special medical team to administer the anti-viral drug Tamiflu to suspected cases. (TNA)

Suspect: 1. To regard as probable; surmise. 2. To distrust or doubt; suspected their motives. 3. To think guilty without proof; one who is suspected, esp. of having committed a crime.

On a similar note, see the bold. The wording is amazingly panic-driven.

Wow that's a huge area, and the cat is looking west. Looks amazingly like the profile of a cat.

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

This Indochinese cat is looking northwestward to be more precise, towards it's motherland--the interface between India and China, the source of it's power and it's homeland, for there lies tens of billions of it's prey as well as half the world's human population. Now just remember everyone!!! This is just a joke to keep myself sane. There IS no cat. :)

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

I wonder why I didn't think of checking earlier, but now that we're seeing suspected cases in Bangkok, I looked up Bangkok International Airport. It is the world's 9th busiest airport for international passengers! 27 million of them visited Bangkok last year! That's 3 people for every Bangkok inhabitant! Sheesh.

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

I remember someone saying a while back, that one of the indicators would be a rush at the airports, such as Bangkok to leave. Still don't know how you would get an indication of that though?

I don't think we need any more indicators, Commonground. Look at these threads--there's your indicators.

There's your indicator, Commonground, bunches of exposed people leaving the country.

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

Wait! I'm having a Senior moment here. Morgan, what is temporarily removed pending more details? Well....I guess I must still be hoping its regular flu.......am I being naive?:o

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

Ok, everyone, time to calm down a little. Forget about Bangkok for right now. They're having their regular flu season right now. Let's chill a little. If something bad is happening, we'll be the first to know. Speculation over.

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

This is the only human confirmed H5N1 case (death) from the area.

Exposure for this single confirmed case must have occurred before July 15. I still think we should be seeing more hospitalizations and deaths by now if many of these suspected cases are actually a strain of H5N1. Are there any news reports that suspected cases are being routinely "blanketed" with Tamiflu?

Re: Thailand 7/27 - 7/29

This appears to be similar to other human cases in other countries where testing is performed on all those around the victim. Also, this is regular flu season in Thailand.

This outbreak does not seem to be following a typical contagious disease outbreak progression.

Of course, time will tell.
