SONGKHLA: An outbreak of the chikungunya virus, an infection which typically occurs in Africa, has been reported in Hat Yai City, necessitating a campaign to educate people about the disease and preventive measures, a doctor said.

Thailand chikungunya cases top 1,000 in January

The chikungunya outbreak that began last year in southern Thailand continues into the first month of 2019 as country health officials report more than 1,000 cases through Jan. 28.

According to the Bureau of Epidemiology, a total of 1075 cases were reported from 14 provinces during the first four weeks.

No deaths have been reported.

The increase in cases continues in the southern provinces with Phuket reporting a morbidity rate of (67.45 / 100,000 population) with the provinces of Songkla and Pattani also reported high rates of infection...

Phuket officials ramp up fight against Chikungunya
PHUKET: The Phuket Public Health Office (PPHO) has ramped up its campaign is against Chikungunya after a spike in infections throughout the province since the beginning of the year.

Phuket Public Health Office Chief Tanit Sermkaew explained to The Phuket News on Thursday (Feb 21) that 308 people in Phuket had been confirmed as contracting Chikungunya from Jan 1 through Feb 14.

The spike in infections has resulted in Phuket being designated as having the highest infection rate in the country, he added.

?Since the beginning of the year there have been confirmed cases of Chikungunya in 17 provinces. Phuket is now in the top spot, while Pattani is second and Songkla third for the number of infections per 100,000 people,? Mr Tanit explained.

According to the Ministry of Public Health?s Bureau of Epidemiology, from Jan 1 through Feb 17, a total of 1,841 cases were reported from 18 provinces, with no deaths reported...

Thailand: Chikungunya cases up 500 in past week, nearly 10,000 dengue cases reported in 2019

Thailand health officials reported an additional 500-plus chikungunya cases during the past week, bringing the outbreak total, primarily in the south, to 2,551 cases.

No deaths have been reported.

Pattani, Phuket and Songkla provinces continue to be the most affected by the outbreak.

Concerning dengue fever, officials say since the beginning of the year, 9,914 cases have been reported, including nine fatalities...

SINGAPORE - Two students are being treated for chikungunya fever after being diagnosed with the virus here, following a study trip to Thailand which saw many of their party taken ill.

School of the Arts (Sota) principal Mary Seah told The Straits Times on Tuesday (June 4) that all 28 people who were on the Sota trip to Ratchaburi province - 25 students and three teachers - had returned to Singapore by Monday night.

Nine students and one teacher contracted the virus in Thailand, where they were diagnosed with and treated for the mosquito-borne condition.

They have since recovered, but two more from the group were diagnosed in Singapore on Monday.

One student received outpatient treatment at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while the other was still hospitalised as of Tuesday, a Ministry of Health (MOH) spokesman said.

Sota notified parents of the students affected, with some flying to Bangkok to be with their children...

Thailand moves to control mosquito-borne Chikungunya disease

Bangkok (VNA) ? The Thai Department of Disease Control (DDC) has sent a medical team to Suan Phung district in Ratchaburi province after reports of Chikyngunya virus infection of 14 visiting students and teachers from Singapore.

DDC Chief Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai said the team would start fogging mosquitoes in targeted areas this week. In addition, local authorities would provide mosquito nets to communities as well as launching a major clean-up to eradicate water-clogged spots, known as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The move came after DDC declared the district as high-risk after the Singaporeans tested positive for Chikungunya disease. They had visited a community in the district then developed fever, headache, body pain and vomiting. They were treated in a hospital and returned home after that.

According to DDC?s statistics, more than 3,500 cases of Chikungunya, with zero deaths, have been reported so far this year. Most patients are aged 25-34 years, followed by 15-24 and 35-44...

Thailand chikungunya cases top 10,000 for 2019

The number of cases of the mosquito-borne viral disease, chikungunya, have surpassed the 10,000 mark in Thailand, according to the country’s Bureau of Epidemiology.

Since the beginning of the year through November 24, Thailand has reported 10,146 chikungunya cases in 56 provinces, nearly three times the number reported in all of 2018 (3,580/18 provinces).

No deaths have been reported.

The provinces with the highest prevalence of the disease include Pattani, Ranong, Tak, Phuket and Songkhla...
