Been poking around on the Ministry of Public Health's epidemiology page: http://epid.moph.go.th/

Found one report - "Reported Cases of Priority by Diseases Under Surveillance, 30 th Week, July 23 - 29, 2006" which, unfortunately, doesn't give the number of deaths due to influenza (although there is a column for that - it's just blank). According to this report, so far this year there have been 7,821 influenza cases:

A 5% mortality rate is twice that of the pandemic of 1918 here in the States. Not only is the flu being under-reported, it appears to be out of the bag! Even if it somehow turns out to be a flu other than H5N1 (which I don't believe for a minute) this is still horrible news. Where are the WHO, and what do they have to say re: these totals? I'd give a lot to find out if the totals were in referance to the 6,000 number or the 140,000 number?

If you counted only those patients who were hospitalized for influenza in the US, which I totally think is what Thailand is basing their numbers on, you would get a much higher mortality rate too. I totally think that Thailand has a far higher rate of H5N1 than it thinks, and I also don't think that the mortality rate is anywhere near the 55% level touted by everyone, but at the same time, these numbers are meaningless. These hospitals and clinics likely also have categories for "diarrhea", "encephalitis", "dengue hemorrhagic fever", "pneumonia", "severe cold", "respiratory infection", "mysterious illness" "unknown fever", "unknown typhoid". H5N1 could be mistaken for all of these categories, so how is anyone supposed to know what the real numbers are.

"Bird flu is like dengue fever in that they are both endemic diseases and the virus can exist anywhere and can be active when the conditions are right. For us, any place that reports mass chicken deaths with unclear reasons, we assume it is a bird-flu area. We don't wait for the lab tests of the DLD," he said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Dr Pratch Boonyawongviroj, permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry, said the latest victim became sick on July 24 after burying his dead chickens on July 17. He went to see a doctor on July 27 and was tested with a bird-flu rapid-test kit. The result was negative.
On July 30 the man went to the Sawang Arom hospital with symptoms that appeared the same as those caused by bird flu. But a laboratory test again confirmed that he was negative for the virus.
The next day, doctors decided to give him oseltamivir, an anti-viral drug that can be used to treat bird flu, and transferred him to Uthai Thani provincial hospital, where he died on Thursday. On Saturday he was confirmed as the country's 16th victim of bird flu since the first outbreak in 2004.
Meanwhile Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan yesterday announced 29 provinces as high-risk bird-flu areas. The 29 provinces are: Bangkok, Sing Buri, Angthong, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi, Suphan Buri, Chai Nat, Pathum Thani, Lop Buri, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Phichit, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Phatom, Phitsanulok, Udon Thani, Kanchanaburi, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachin Buri, Phetchabun, Uttaradit, Sukhothai and Uthai Thani.

According to caretaker Health Minister Phinij Jarusombat, who inspected bird flu-infected areas in Uthai Thani province yesterday, the latest victim fell sick last Thursday and was admitted to Uthai Thani provincial hospital on Saturday. The results of tests to verify whether the unidentified man is actually infected with the deadly H5N1 virus are expected to be known today.

Phinij said the man, who was working on a chicken farm with 20,000 birds in Uthai Thani?s Muang district, might have contracted the disease after burying dead birds late last month while not wearing protective gear.

The minister said he had given strict instructions to about 800,000 public health volunteers throughout the country to inform villagers to exercise extreme caution when handling dead birds. ?Villagers should not handle dead birds. But if they have to, they must wear rubber gloves or several layers of plastic bags?and they must absolutely not eat any sick or dead birds,? Phinij said.

Starting today, the ministry will also launch a national cleanliness campaign that encourages people to wash their hands frequently.

The third suspected human case came after the minister confirmed on Saturday that a 27-year-old man who died last Thursday in Uthai Thani?s Sawang Arom district had succumbed to the H5N1 virus, making him the second person to have died of the disease this year. The first case was reported in Phichit province on July 26.

Public Health permanent secretary Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said in light of the latest outbreak in Uthai Thani, the provincial hospital there has now been equipped with special facilities to handle suspected bird flu patients and test for the virus. He added that public health volunteers had been instructed to monitor the symptoms of any unwell villagers and report their findings every morning.

Dr Prat added that the ministry would no longer issue daily reports on suspected patients who are under medical surveillance as there are too many of them and the list of names changes daily. He said the ministry will only issue announcements when bird flu or serious human influenza cases are confirmed.

Meanwhile, the directorgeneral of the Disease Control Department, Dr Thawat Suntrajarn, said Bangkok-based medical experts met with provincial doctors yesterday and mapped out plans to speed up the handling of suspected human bird-flu cases.

Patients suffering from fever and cough who are known to have handled sick or dead birds will be given oseltamivir phosphate, a generic version of Roche Pharmaceuticals? Tamiflu that is now being produced locally, even if initial tests are negative, he said.

According to Dr Thawat, 80 people, mainly Uthai Thani provincial hospital staff or villagers living in the vicinity of the second victim, are currently undergoing 14 days of medical surveillance after receiving the local version of Tamiflu.
