Thai, Lao reset bird flu cooperation meeting

BANGKOK, Aug. 4 (TNA) - Thailand and Laos will meet regarding cross-border cooperation to fight the return of avian influenza (bird flu) after a new outbreak of the deadly H5N1 viral strain was confirmed in poultry farms in a northeastern Thai province bordering Laos.

Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon told reporters that Thai and Laotian agricultural and health officials would meet on August 8 to seek cooperation to contain the spread of the virus.

Last week, Laos cancelled a similar meeting with Thailand set for Thursday after reports in Thai media alleged it was the source of the outbreak in Nakhon Phanom which prompted Thai officials to cull some
300,000 chickens and quarantine 765 local villagers.

Mr. Khantathi said he phoned his Laotian counterpart and explained the media reports.

''Our new meeting will avoid discussing the source of the latest outbreak of bird flu in the Thai border town but will seek joint measures to contain the disease which would affect people and animals on both sides,'' said the Thai foreign minister.

''The Lao authorities now understand this matter and are ready to cooperate,'' he said, adding that Laos would send its foreign ministry spokesman to Bangkok to in a bid to strengthen bilateral relations and seek cooperation in many areas. (TNA)-E110
