A Fort Hood, Texas, soldier found dead outside his residence in nearby Killeen on Tuesday returned from duty in West Africa less than a week ago, but "there is no indication of the Ebola virus disease," base officials said.
The soldier, who has not been identified, was granted emergency leave from the 21-day quarantine (Defense Department officials call it "controlled monitoring") for family reasons, Fort Hood spokesman Tyler Broadway said. The soldier had been reporting his medical status twice daily to medical officials during his leave.

The cause of the soldier?s death is ?highly unlikely to be Ebola,? CDC spokesman Tom Skinner wrote in a statement to The Hill. The Department of Defense will be leading the investigation, and the CDC will not be sending in a special team to the soldier's home just outside Fort Hood, Skinner said.
The soldier?s body will be tested for Ebola at a nearby medical facility as a precaution, KCEN, a local ABC affiliate, reported. Military police in Texas are also responding to scene wearing biohazard suits.

The soldier was found in or near a pool of vomit, prompting concern about Ebola, according to a Defense Department official speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the investigation.
A second Defense official said the soldier had been allowed to leave the post after returning from west Africa under emergency leave and had not shown signs of the disease when he returned to the post.
"At this point, there is no indication of the Ebola virus disease, but medical tests are underway to ensure there is no threat to the community," the Fort Hood statement said...

Killeen Police Investigate Death of Fort Hood Soldier

Killeen Police are investigating the death of a Fort Hood soldier on Cantabrian.

Officers received a report of possible deceased male in the 3300 block of Cantabrian on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 8:06am. Upon the officers? arrival they located a deceased male lying face down in front of his residence. During the investigation the officers learned that the male was a 24 year old Fort Hood soldier who had recently returned from West Africa. Due to conditions in West Africa and because the male?s cause of death was unknown at the time, precautionary measures were put into place.

Officers deployed the City of Killeen HAZMAT Team to respond to the residence at 3306 Cantabrian. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced the male deceased at 8:26am and ordered an autopsy to be performed. The male?s body has been removed and taken to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center to run a test for Ebola; we should learn the results of that test by the end of the day.

There is no confirmation that Ebola is present. Because of the circumstances surrounding this death the Killeen Police Department felt it was better to err on the side of caution in the interest of public safety. This investigation is in collaboration with Fort Hood authorities.

The name of the soldier has been withheld at this time due to notification of his next of kin.

Detectives continue to investigate this death and information will be released as it becomes available.
