Flu death toll rises to 37 in Travis County
The Travis County Health Department reported Thursday that the number of flu deaths recorded in Travis County has risen to 37.

The Travis County Health Department said that as of Tuesday, the number of flu deaths recorded in the county has risen to 37.

Officials reported that about 63 percent of those deaths occurred with people over the age of 80 and that most of the deaths have involved people with previous health conditions. Five of those deaths happened in February, officials said.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - As the confirmed number of flu cases in El Paso reaches 5,000 - the Department of Public health says three more people have died as a result of the epidemic.

The latest flu victims include two men, one in his 80s and another in his 50s. The 11th death this season was reported as a woman in her 70s. All three victims had underlying medical conditions that complicated their treatment.

SAN ANTONIO - On Wednesday, 15-year-old Precious Angel Hernandez Cantu start to feel sick. Just four days later, she was put on life support and then she died.

"I was the first person to hold her. I was the last person to hold her," her father, Steve Cantu, said.

Cantu sat next to his sons Monday, holding his younger daughter as he grieved over his oldest.

Officials with the Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, where Precious was taken, said they cannot comment on her stay there. Metro Health, which reports pediatric flu deaths, cannot report yet whether Precious died from the flu. Officials said they need to investigate the cause of her death and that could take at least a week.

Second child in Houston dies from flu-related causes (Harris County)

A second area child has died from flu-related causes, the Houston health department reported Wednesday.

Health officials said a boy between the ages of 6 and 10 with pre-existing health conditions died in early February. They released no other details.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Two more El Pasoans have died as a result of the flu, according to the Department of Public Health. The latest deaths bring the total of flu-related deaths this season to 13.

Just as with the previously reported deaths, the two recent cases involve elderly people, a woman in her 70s and man in his 80s and had underlying medical conditions.

The 2017-2018 influenza season grew deadlier on Tuesday, claiming three more lives in Denton County.

Denton County Public Health reported that three adults succumbed to strains of the virus, bringing the season's death toll to 12.

Public health officials did not report any influenza-associated deaths in Denton County during the past two seasons, although such reporting is not required. This season, the flu has claimed one child and 11 adults.

DALLAS (March 5, 2018) ? Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting two additional flu-related deaths in Dallas County totaling 74 flu-related deaths for the 2017-2018 season. The patients were 66 and 94-years-old. Both patients had high risk health conditions and died after complications from the seasonal flu. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information.
